SVT 3rd gear crunch

3rd gear has been acting weird. Few weeks ago I noticed when I shifted to 3rd sometimes it wouldn't let me So I had to go back to neutral then back to 3rd.

Now My car goes into 3rd gear but it makes a weird plastic crunch sound. Only does it when I'm driving. Couldn't emulate the problem while the car is off or on.

Learned how to drive stick on this baby and only owned this car for 3 months. Has a new clutch with all the goodies, new clutch master cylinder (was leaking).Clutch was done at 71.2k, now car has 74.6k. Just recently put in some new bushings for the motor mount (dogbone). Now 2nd gear doesn't clunk.

The other night I wanted to test out the bushings So for the first time I reved the car and droped the clutch. The clutch grabs fine but when I was shifting it gets pretty tight from first to 2nd then to third (no wheel hop!). Then that is when I started to notice a crunch. any insight would be nice.

That is not a clutch issue. If there is a "crunch" or you feel the Crunch going in to 3rd, your 3rd gear synchro is going bad (not a Cheap Nor easy fix). Do Not down shift in to 3rd unless you rev match down shift or Heel toe down shift. this way you do not put more stress on the synchro.

So it is supposed to sound like crunching plastic when its a bad synchro?

Would like to update this and I don't get the crunch. Has something to do with the shift tower, maybe the grease sucks when its cold. It doesn't get to cold where I live this mainly happens at night after midnight.

Found out one night while i was backing up my car then I noticed my other gears felt really good and shifted like butter. Seems like the shifter got reset back were its suppose to be. IT still sometimes goes in a little rough but its always been that way. Now I figured out I have to get the gears just right for it to be smooth. IT's a weird problem and only happens when its colder.

Your shift cables are probably stretched from age. There are also bushings on the shift tower that wear out as well.
