UDP with harmonic balancer

Hi,

I am considering getting a UDP but I'm concerned in losing my harmonic balancer also. I read a thread where they said the UDP without harmonic balancer might be deleterious to the long term reliability of an engine. I also talked with my brother about this. After explaining that the UDP would take place of the harmonic balancer, he advised against it. He had read in the 6.5l diesel pages that defective harmonic balancers, or defective torque converters/clutches could create external harmonics which can lead to busted cranks.

My question is if there are any companies that sell UDP with integral harmonic balancer, or if there are possibly a different vehicle/application that would have a smaller drive pully on the harmonic balancer? Maybe the zx2, or escape have smaller pulleys?

Thanks,

Preston

Nope, there are none. It would be a decent product to make, because IMO, the market is there. However, to design one of those correctly, you need better tools and information than most tuners have access to. Plus, manufacturing costs would be higher than a solid CNC'd piece. God only knows what it would end up costing us.

I wouldn't expect them to make one either. Getting it wrong by a few hz could prove to be more detremental than helpful.

All US engines have harmonic balancers. I cannot speak about your Euro engines...

Great question! I have the same doubt. Does it worth it?

Keep in mind that the crank pulley is balanced to the entire engine and is different from engine to engine. That is why you will see several small holes in it... it is where the engine plant took out mass to balance it. Without taking it to an autoshop and having them drop the engine and rebalance it with the new pulley, asking for an OEM balance from an aftermarket outfit is impossible.

i heard, but not 100% sure though, maybe someone else can chime in... but yea, the thing with our engines is that it has an internal harmonic balancer, so if we change the UDP it will not affect the harmonics of the engine or cause any addtional NVH(noise vibration harshness). please correct me if i'm wrong! this is just something i've read don't really remember where though, i plan on doing an UDP as soon as i get some $$$
