2000 Focus SE engine noise - Part 2

2000 Ford Focus SE - a 2.0 L Split Port engine with 129,000 miles. I posted earlier, over 180 people viewed but only 1 response (thank you very much Milton). I really need help....

Daughter drove the car on the freeway, likely in "2" instead of drive for about a mile. She described as very loud with much vibration. Caused a loud knock, I can not determine the exact location of the knock.

Milton suggested I rule out a dropped valve seat. Excellent advice. Can anyone tell me how to do that without pulling the head or spending over $100 for a scope? The car still runs perfectly smooth, just the knock. Would that be the case if it dropped a valve seat? I pulled the plugs and visually inspected the tops of the pitons and the plugs (as much as I could with a flashilght), I don't see any evidence of debris in the cylinders.

It has only been driven 5 miles since this happened (slow speed / low load), had to get it home.

I originally suspected maybe it spun a rod bearing based on where the noise was comng from. My plan for the morning is to drain the oil, drop the oil pan and pull the rod caps to inspect the bearings and look for metal in the oil.

Does anyone have experience working on this particular engine? Buying a new (or used) engine, or a complete rebuild are not options for us, we just don't have any money. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Update: Put the car on jack stands, drained the oil and pulled the filter to prep for oil pan removal. Poured the oil thru a filter, no evidence of any metal in there.

Still would like to rule out a dropped seat before pulling the pan or the head. Went to Pep Boys and borrowed a compression tester. Tested all 4 cylinders - cold. It was kind of a crappy tester, so I tested each cylinder (3) times. All 4 cylinders tested between 76 - 79 psi. Seemed low to me, but was encouraged that there was not one cylinder way lower than the others.

Still thinking it could have spun a rod bearing, but I am really open to advice. It is my wife's daily driver, I desperately need to get this thing back on the road.

I haven't started it since I got it home, only cranked it over for the comp test. What would you do if this were your car?
