Yeah, that's what happens when (lots of) mods are performed by people that don't know what they're doing.

In any case, one would think that if there was an inherent design flaw with that engine, Mazda would have fixed it years ago.

Not reccomended to boost under 3k, need to upgrade fuel pump if you mod them, turbos burn oil, timing chain tensioner wears prematurely and chain slaps valve cover....mine personally burned through a quart of oil per week before Mazda replaced the motor at 58k miles

I'm not buying, only leasing cars at the moment so I'm sure I won't run into these problems since I can't mod them unless I take the parts off when the lease is done but that would be a waste.

For a lease car, hands down get the ST, as it will remain relatively stock, and that is how the Focus shines over the Mazda.

Both are good cars. I'd lean toward the Mazda since they're generally more fun to drive. Drive 'em both!

Because they're fun to drive?

I'd consider the 2008 Mazdaspeed3 over the current ST. I really liked the way it drove. Oh, and it had windows. The current Focus ST is a submarine when it comes to rearward visibility. I'd have to test them both again though, if I were in a serious position to buy something.

Well I'm in a serious position to lease another car so I have 3 months to fully test both cars

If you're that concerned about rearward visibility take the outboard head restraints out when you don't have a passenger.

The Focus ST is much more polished and makes a more civilized daily driver, the MazdaSpeed3 is a lot heavier on the torque steer and the interior looks older because it is a lot older.
