key made from vin. cost?

so I just realIzed the key for my ignition does not work for the doors or hatch of my 03 svt 5dr. How much does it cost to have a key made from the vin number? And would I be able to rekey the ignition to match the doors? Thanks

If you have any DIY skills you can take the door locks out and have THEM changed to match the key you have. Ditto hatch.

When i had my purse stolen, I took the door locks out (1997 Mercury Mystique) and just had the pins swapped so it was not possible for the thief to open the doors.
that way no cost and kept other good key. with fob.
Then i had a cheap non fob key cut for doors and stuck that under car. So that key could not start car.
Worked for me.

Probably similar for your car.
So just take the door locks out and have CAR lock guy change them back to fit the key you got.
Ordinary locksmiths may baulk at doing this. Always some specialized automotive locksmith in major cities..

you cannot buy just part of a lockset unless from a junkyard. The doors are way easier to change out than the steering ignition lock.

The dealer has the possibility to look up the key punch code for a VIN, however it only goes back so far and I believe that is 2005 or 2006.

I've had keys made by vin for a 2002 Lincoln. I think the cost was around $20 per key but that did not include programming of the chip.

Actually that was a Lincoln dealer in Florida.
The dealer has the tool to punch out the key based on the code a locksmith is going to have to take a blank and spend a lot of time filing to make a key and it is labor intensive that way.

The best and easiest way to get a key when you have no original is to go to your local dealer with your VIN and have them make it. Most dealers do require proof of ownership such as a title or valid registration with your name on it and your ID, of course.

the dealer does not go back as far as 2003. The route I think I'm going is taking the door lock tumbler out and taking it to the locksmith the only charges $15 a tumbler. Should be under $100 with second key cut and programmed.

I'd try a different dealer because I've had keys made at ford dealers for earlier years.

I just spoke with my local dealer about the keys from VIN and I was told tha after 10 years they are purging the old information from the computer system. Looks like you are right on the edge of the cut off with a 2003.
