Don't have $$ for new sway bars? How about free?*

You guys are going to love me :D I'm always there for free mods, especially the ones where you remove something, add something but don't have to destroy something and make it reversible.

When I was originally selling some old Mazdaspeed6 parts, the funds were going towards a few Focus goodies instead of small bills. Well I opted for the bills first. My first mod I wanted to buy was an upgraded rear sway bar. Still cheap at around 100 bucks. When I was looking at higher performance models (adjustable sway strength) and seeing how it was achieved on the same bar but different connection points, I thought of an idea....

A spring has the least tension when fully unsprung. Even heavy springs can be compressed a bit by an individual. The more it is compressed the more force in the opposite direction. There is a formula for this but you'd get it.

Soo....

If we pre-tighten the stock swaybar so that if the car is to compress anymore, it is already at a higher spring rate (compression), therefore would flex less and mimic a heavier/stronger sway bar with less initial compression.

I merely put some spacers between the endlinks and the sway bar, slightly compressing the swaybar.

I'll take some pics tonight if I can :D

All I can say is that it worked like a charm and didnt' cost me anything as I had some rubber spacers that fit!!!

The rear sway is easiest to work on if you unbolt the endlink and the bushings (2 bolts on each side). Sway bar comes off and then put spacers in. Going to do the front when I have more time as the bolts are in the INSIDE of the subframe :S

Mine were bout half an inch, I think. Test different sizes but make sure the endlink bolt is tight!

Enjoy

I'm kind of confused. It doesn't sound like it will work, in my head...
I don't think you can "compress" the sway bar.

Got pics?

it's more like pre-loading. if the bushings are already compressed then the pressure goes straight to the bar

I get your idea but I think you will do damage to the bar or end links during hard cornering

moving the bushings wont do crap because sway bars work by difference in suspension travel from side to side of the car. the only way to preload the bar is different length endlinks

Exactly. And would only really work in one direction..
