First new car; First Ford

Hey everyone! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Max and I just picked up a '13 Focus hatchback with a 5-speed. It's mainly for my wife to drive, but we're both pretty excited about it and love it so far.

At the dealer:

At home next to my Chevy Sonic:

I don't really have big plans for the car, as it's mainly a baby-hauler for her. In the near term, I'll probably do tint, rear floor mats, cargo mat, and a back-up cam with display in the rear view mirror.

Eventually, I may do a full aftermarket double-DIN nav install, and maybe roof racks. I'd love to pick up a set of ST Recaro's but they are probably $$$$!

What are your thoughts on the Sonic compared to the Focus?

I like both cars a lot. The Focus definitely feels like a more expensive/upscale car inside and I'd say the Sonic is really more comparable to a Fiesta. In the Focus, the stereo and trip computer screens are nicer, the seats are more supportive, there's a soft-touch dash, padding on the front door armrests. The stereo sounds a little better and it's a little quieter. That said, I really prefer the ergonomics of the Sonic. The whole interior is laid out a bit better as far as storage, cup holders, power outlets, and the driver's side center armrest is attached to the seat which makes it much more useful, but there is no front center armrest for the passenger.

For exterior styling I'm kind of indifferent. Both have their highs and lows. They are almost the same length, but the Focus offers the additional utility of the hatch.

Handling: They both handle well but the Focus feels more planted and confident. The Sonic has a lot of body roll. However, the Sonic has much quicker steering which makes it a lot of fun. I occasionally autocross the Sonic and it does pretty well overall.

Performance: The Sonic is the 1.4T and it's lighter so the low-end torque makes it feel a lot quicker. Plus it's tuned, so it actually is quicker in this case. The Focus is no slouch though. I'm very happy with the stock performance.

I like your comparison. I always felt the Sonic looked cheap but ergonomic where as I feel the new Focus interior while nice looking didn't feel friendly to what appeals to me.

Thanks! I just picked up some floor mats and the rear cargo mat.

Upon delivery I asked if there were rear floor mats and my salesman ordered me a complete set of four for free, and it turned out that the fronts were embroidered with the Focus logo. Score! Then when I picked them up, there was a black carpet rear cargo mat also with the Focus logo, marked down to $30, so I picked that up too. Double score!

Yeah, despite the cargo ratings on Chevy's website, the sedan actually has much more usable trunk space than the hatch.
