Chack engine lights are a joke. (though not if you have to pay to pass emissions)
On my last car, a Ford Contour SVT, I owned it 13 years.. For most of that time the check engine light was on..
Never a problem.
Though last time it cost me $2,500 to pass emissions...
But ONE time all i did was unplug the battery, and then took it in. Passed and the light came back on a block from the inspection station. Laughed a LOT that time.

(Some emissions parts are covered 5 years to 60,000 miles)

Most of the time a check engine light is a bad O2 sensor, or a loose gas cap. That's how it seems anyhow.
