See that's what I thought too. I tried to tell her that. She said that it doesn't make sense since we had 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT that had 267k miles and the CEL on and it still got better MPGs then our focus.
I told her she was crazy.
But I think I might start with the o2 sensors first. If that doesn't help then I will fix the exhaust.

Moved to "General Technical Chat". This would work better in the technical chat area than in the performance area.

If the CEL was on for say loose fuel cap, the car could run perfect and still post a code. There are quite a few other scenarios that would work the same way. Need a better overall understanding of what the CEL means, like so many other people.

Upper O2 first, it has much to do with mileage, the lower one, not so much at all. Upper one computer uses to set fuel, the lower simply monitors the catalytic converter's condition.

'I tried to tell her that.'

I feel your pain most deeply, having been married for 33 years now.

Like amc49 says, the CEL is for many different issues, some affecting mileage and some not. Get the code and go from there.
I don't keep strict track of it, but every time I've checked the mileage on my '03 ZX5 it comes up a minimum of 28mpgs. It has to 370k kms, so a bit over 230k miles.

Thanks for the input. I will change the o2 sensor and go from there. It can't hurt.
But now my wife says cause I don't top the tank off when I fill it we get worse gas mileage. And again I told her that it doesn't matter. That has nothing to do with the mpg of the car. Now she thinks I'm crazy. I just need to fix the problem without her knowing I did. And when. We start getting better mpg then I can tell her she was wrong.
That sounds like a good plan there. Lol.

How are you calculating mpg?

I go 3 weeks and add up the mileage and all the gallons of gas used during that 3 week period and divide the miles by gas and that's where I come up with my mpgs.

Here is something I don't get. Why do the European Foci get better gas mileage then US Foci? I also did some research on drag coefficiants and found that US Foci have a higher drag then Euro Foci. Is this true?

Some of their engines used are smaller than ours.

Topping off tank does nothing, but if insisted on, you can cause problems by overfilling, you'll get CEL for evap system.

Ha. Sounds like I'm winning this debate. I hope she relizes thhat this is one. Thing she isn't right about.

Can I get a programer fo my car that will help with the fuel economy, or does it not do enough to justify the cost?
