Focus S 5 speed

Anybody have one of these and what are your thoughts? They have some rebates in my area now and these are only 800 more than the base Fiesta. I just need a point A to B car that is reliable. I dont care about options or what it looks like as these kinds of cars are like appliances to me.

I need to know if there are any problem areas to be aware of with the base package. Thanks.

I sat in a few Fiesta's before I bought my car. $800 bucks is worth the better interior quality IMO. The Fiesta was like a bunch of hard plastic just stuck everywhere. Plus the Focus is bigger. And with the MT you are not going to have to worry about any of the DCT problems people are having. I know Zolemite has a base MT, with a lot of miles, and I don't think he has any negative things to say. I have read that the SFE package is only $70 more or something like that, and it gives you rear disc brakes. I'm probably wrong on the dollar amount, but it is less than $100, and I'm not sure if that options out on a 2014 the same way, but for a little extra, it's worth it.

The SFE package is $95, but you have to have the DCT on the Sedan to get it. It's so cheap because you're trading the alloy wheels for steel wheels with hubcaps in order to get four wheel disk brakes, the spoiler, and lrr tires.

Well that's a bummer. Still think the OP would be better off in a Focus vs Fiesta.

EDIT: Suss, you encyclopedia of knowledge, why is the SFE package only offered on the DCT? Is the car rated higher MPG with the DCT? Back in the day, all manuals I bought had better MPG rating than the auto counter parts. Giving, those were 5-speed manuals vs 4 speed autos.

Thank you for the replies. There is not enough gold at Fort Knox to make me want or let alone pay extra for the DCT or MFT. No offense to you guys but they both suck and its just too risky in my estimation. I typically drive a car into the ground and wear it flat out so trouble spots are important to look out for before you buy.

Are the engines holding up ok? I know in the past I have had a lot of Fords and Gm cars that ate things like alternators and water pumps ect all of the time. I would hope Ford is using better stuff these days but still find it hard to trust them and I am a Ford guy at heart for the most part. The Corolla is horrible and the Civic is too expensive and I would just rather not buy a Chevy because I dont feel like helping a bailout company. Yes, I hold a grudge. I will do a search and see if I can find some 5 speed members and what they think. Seems the vast majority go for the auto though.

I would definitely go with the Focus over the Fiesta. The interior is more roomy with better quality materials. I almost went with the Fiesta, and the few times I've parked next to one I'm so glad I didn't. $800 gets you a heck of a lot more car.

The DCT is rated as getting higher fuel economy than the 5MT due to the taller gearing, when combined with the low rolling resistance tires, hub caps, rear disk brakes, and spoiler the car is rated for 40 mpg highway vs 37-38 for the regular DCT Focus, and 36 highway for the 5MT.

Well, that is what I am thinking also. Little better ride, more room, little more power for the big hills ect... Yet, it still gets awefully good gas mileage to boot. Once you get up in the mid to high 30's whats a mpg here or there. I do wish the focus had a bigger gas tank though. Seems tiny for the size of the car.

Its been sometime ago but I read a few complaints about the 5 speeds being geared too low at highway speeds. They need a 6 speed badly imo. I have a hard time understanding why there is such a difference in high gear but I am sure the engineers have their reasons.
