Use Motorcraft. It is designed for your vehicle. Just picked up a FL-400 for $3.69 at Autozone.

Do not use a racing filter. It has no drain back valve.

The racing filter DOES have an anti drain back valve

*High quality silicone anti-drain back valve

Motorcraft FL-1a filters are made by Purolator, so another great substitute is the PureOne PL30001 filter, and the PSL30001 is similar to the Ford Racing filter, except that the media is wire-backed, fully synthetic rather than the synth/cellulose blend in the Ford Racing version. The PSL30001 would be more directly comparable to a K&N or Mobil 1 synthetic filter.

The main difference between the PureOne and the FL-1A is the location of the bypass valve (thread end vs. dome end), but that makes no difference in an application such as the Zetec where the filter is mounted horizontally. The dome-end bypass that Purolator uses allows for slightly more filtering media in the same size can.
