I keep the tires at max pressure as listed on the sidewall and drive a steady speed. I can beat the cruise control for fuel mileage. Learn to coast and to anticipate hills is how to do it. One of the radio guys here had a new one that claimed 45-46 mpgs at 75mpg so it's possible. On these critters I think the tires are one of the most important parts for good mpgs. Keep a premium set on for the mileage. Ours came with Generals. When we swapped to Bridgestone Pole Positions, the mileage went up but ride went down and they were noisy. We're now running Yokohamas and the ride is back, the car is quiet, and the mileage is still there.
Interesting info on the tires, thanks!

You may be shocked at how fast and far it drops once you off the highway though. If I fill up, reset my MPG counter than go on the freeway I can hit over 40 easy...as soon as I get off its dropping to 32.

I'm very interested to see what you can manage through

I can second this point. I was pushing 40 after a new tank of gas on the highway. Got off and got stuck at the first light off the highway and it just dropped all the way to 29. By the time I got home I was at 25 and then moving it in and out of the garage to wash it I was pushing low 20s. I usually average 24ish I would say about 75% city driving and the 25% highway driving I do is about half sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

I currently drive a 2005 Ford 500 and average 28MPG. My intent was to purchase a new vechicle that could get 40+. (I realize the stated MPG for the Focus is 37.) In regards to budget, I am not so concerned about that - other than, it would not make sense to spend $500 to get a 1MPG increase. My payback is 5 years. So any modification that can pay for itsself in five years - would be considered.
Seeing that you live in Iowa I must say STAY AWAY from corn gas (Ethanol) That crap KILLS your mileage. I know that all gas sold in Iowa has some in it by state law, just find the lowest percentage possible.

I have found the cars computer pretty reliable in determining mpg. Mine is usually .5 to 1 mpg more optimistic than my hand calculations. I reset it after every fill up.

It's a US-wide issue, not just Iowa. Ethanol is being blended according to EPA rules now, not state laws. So it's federally mandated.
