Hey RJ, check out http://origin.autospeed.com they have lots of good articles on how to modify a car for better mpg's. It includes aero mods and interesting tech articles on tires, etc... And most of the mods dont require driving style changes.

I know you are probably tired of hearing it, but honestly slowing down does do wonders. I was driving as fast as I could on interstates and didn't care about how hard
I mashed the pedal to take off or pass people. That style got me between 32-35. I changed my style just this past week to still driving fast on the way to work, but on the way home stayed as close to 55 as possible for my max and didn't let it rev over 2500 when getting up to speed. That tank immediately jumped me to 40. I also have noticed that the windows down is a better route than ac, even at interstate speeds. Of course we all have different numbers and different results because everyones car and commute are different.

That's odd... I get much better MPG with A/C on the highway than with windows down. 65-70 MPH.

It might be a toss-up at 50-55 though...

Absoolutely better mpg with air on and windows closed than air off and ANY windows (including moonroof) open, even a crack.
And that is anything over 45mph.

One key way to get better mpg (if you are desparate) is to tailgate semitrailer trucks.
I always thought making some sort of grapple device would be the answer..
A strong pole (from under car..)reach out and grab on the truck.. And let your engine idle at 70mph..

In the grand scheme of a $10k (cost) car would that not be a benefit in order to advertise another 2-4mpg (which is what members here report) and increase in HP (which members here report)? What's the true story? What am I missing?
the reason Ford doesn't add an CAI to a car aside from the cost is NVH reasons. cars have to meet certain sound requirements and CAIs make the intake sound louder. Plus 50-75 a car is huge when you're talking about hundreds of thousands of cars per year.

45 MPG without changing your driving habits is unrealistic.

The real question is if you wanted to get 45 MPG why did you buy a Focus???

check this site out maybe you can find some info here, but the main thing they will tell you to do as well is slow down.

This

I have spent a thousand or so on performance mods, the car while noticeable quicker than stock is also a lot louder.

Thanks for the link, lots of interesting tips out there. Still trying to get the courage up to turn my car off at hwy speed. When you do that, does it auto start when you put it back in gear? (Like popping the clutch?)

on ours you shouldn't need to actually shut off it will stop sending fuel if their is no engine load

Just make sure none of those "tips and tricks" will get you or someone else killed. You know of course that you have no power steering or power brakes when the car is off?

I think the best way to drastically increase your mileage would be to unscrew the radiator cap, drive a Fusion Energi under it, and replace the cap. Personally, I find it remarkable that a vehicle can get 40mpg (yes, I can do that quite easily in my 5-speed hatch) with 7 airbags, carrying 4 people, and still last hundreds of thousands of miles.
