MK3 owner with general question about the MK2

I currently drive a MK3 Hatch, so I'm familiar with that vehicle. However the wife was recently in an accident and it looks like her '07 Cobalt is going to be totaled. This means we are in the market for another car.

I have been keeping one eye on Craig's List while we settle with the insurance company and there are a lot of MK2s for sale in my area. I like the look of them, and they seem to be pretty nice cars so it's made my watch list while we're shopping.

After what I've learned about the MK3 however I am curious, does the MK2 have any major issues that plague it? I will continue to do some research on my own, but since we're currently down a vehicle buying a new one is slightly fast tracked and I can't take my normal several weeks to research things. :(

On the site in the last year I haven't seen much about the 08-11's in complaints. Mostly threads about how many are for sale, which is ironic you could say. In all honesty though I believe them to be a well built car. My grandma loved her base model '10 when she had it, but had to sell it because my grandpa is like 6 foot 5 and couldn't fit in it. so keep that in mind, they are small, but only to a 6'5" 80 somethin guy. I personally love em though. just make sure to find a 2 door with rear oem spoilers

They seem to be very well put together. Just passed 100k on my 2009 and the only thing i've done to it is swaybar links, valve cover gasket, battery, and carrier bearing (bearing was replaced under warranty). Only time it has left me stranded was when the battery went out (5 years old, not to bad).

The drive train and suspension didnt really change much with the second gens, mostly cosmetic things to the body and interior. Ford had several years to fix any thing that would be wrong with it, normally pretty solid duratec and reliable.

Good to hear that for the most part they are solid cars. Some basic googling hasn't pulled up any major issues, but I wanted to get a second opinion from people who actually drive them. My biggest worry was that there was something major with the MK2 like there was with the DCT in the MK3. Seems like I just need do the normal used car inspection and I'll be ready to roll.

Now here is hoping we can find a manual... from what I gather they are rare with this car.

The Mk3s will be the unreliable ones for the first year or 2 until they fix things. My mom worked at a ford dealership and they had tons of issues with the mk3.

I got my 2011 mk2 for a good price and love it. Last years of a generation are always the best but like somebody else said they didn't change much so there wasn't much to go wrong.

We now have 3 Mk2s in the family!

It's the same basic car as the 2000 Focus - any problems were ironed out a long time ago.

Seems like the only real problems is motor mounts and paint problems.

only problem i had with my 09 was the spring for the clutch pedal return broke and seemed to happen to several others as well. not a big issue, but seemed to be fairly common. the interior feels a little cheaper than the other models, but overall it was a great car and I had fun with it.

Get a 2010-12 Focus and you'll be happy even with the auto. I have over 60,000 on my 2010 and love it.
