P0410 & P0491 -potential engine damage?

Just got these codes, and I know it's tied to the air pump system, so my initial thought is "NO" it wont cause damage in at least the short term (week or 3).

I hope to dig through it in the next couple days, but we'll see how that goes. I can smell a little (what I thought was smoke at the time) exhaust if I'm sitting at a light, but notice no drivable changes. Hoping that because I can smell something that maybe a hose just has a hole or something.

Pump is about $162 shipped, so fingers crossed.

It did rain a couple days before, but I didnt drive in the rain, so I do not beleive it sucked up any water.

Well I went out and did some testing. Removed the rubber hose that's hooked up to the intake and turned the car on. It sucks air in, I can feel the pull with my hand on it, which means my pump is working, so the valve may be f'd or a bad hose.

Any particular way to test the valve? (130-160$ for part)

Looking more and more like I will be hitting up Tom for a tune to cut it out.

Moved to General Technical Chat. I would also recommend searching for the codes that you got on the search bar in the top right corner. When I searched, I found this:

That was just the first result, there are many more! Hope that helped a bit. Good luck!

Huh... our DTC code list is usually complete- what scanner are you using? Could these codes be caused by an unrelated vacuum leak? I don't have secondary air injection, so I don't know.

Have you tried to clear the codes?

I am using my SCT SF3. It gave me those two codes and the definitions. p0410 "Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction" p0491 "Secondary Air System - Insufficient Flow - Bank 1"

Only the PZEV cars have this "Smog pump" it's not belt driven like the older cars used to have, it's electronically controlled. Basically it only runs on startup for 10-30 seconds sending air through the exhaust to heat up the cat quicker and produce lower emissions overall.

I did search around and there wasnt any info for how to test if the solenoid is bad, only to check the fuses/relays and pump (all good).

If it's a hose I'll fix it, if it's the solenoid at 130-150$, I'll just get a tune that eliminates/turns off that POS system all together.

it's not an o2 sensor, because mileage has not changed, nor has driveability and I havent seen any rain here in a while (AZ).

I did try to clear the codes and in two days they came back (it had to complete all it's tests I assume before it illuminated the CEL/SES).

Hey I just got these codes also and immediately went to autozone to have them check the codes for free. Im a complete novice and need my car for the weekly 35 mile commute to work.

Due to the recent storm we had in the area I did drive over large standing water for im sure there is water in the air injection system? Im planning on bringing it to a mechanic this week prob this friday. How much of an impack will this have on my car for a week?. Seems like nobody has a solid answer to the problem so im pretty worried about using my car now.

I've been running mine for about 2-3 weeks since the codes, 37 miles each way to work and my mpg has remained unchanged and I haven't noticed anything different (no bucking, hiccups, wierd idle or anything else).

Figure out what part is causing it. Check your fuses/relays, the pump is the next easiest to diagnose, beyond that, you may have to do a smoke test or air pressure test on the air lines to see if it's one of them, not sure how to test the solenoid.

Thanks for the reply! I was getting worried about putting more miles on the car. I think im just going to bring it to a shop to have it fixed on friday. By fuses what should I be looking for? I can't believe this problem is so hard to diagnosis.

This code will not go away. I went to a mechanic and he completely took the secondary unit out and with a compressor blew water out of the hose.

He put everything back together, and day later the code comes back on, and and the car in the morning I'm guessing because it's cold starts up sluggish now.

What the deal with this code, it's starting to annoy me, luckly I was only charged 25 bucks for the mechanic to take a look.

Seems like it got worse once he took the unit out of the car.

The water may have already damaged the pump or solenoid so it's not working which is why you're getting the code.
It should not create any driveability issues. Maybe act a tad funky at startup for 10-30 seconds.

My CEL for this has been on for over a month (4-6 weeks) and no problems, mpg still holding steady. I am waiting for my SCT to come back unlocked, I'm just getting a tune to remove all that crapola.
