Manual transmission doing weird things

When I go up a steep hill and downshift my 5 speed won't go into gear. Once I get it on level ground again it shifts fine. I checked the brake fuid. Anything else to check.

Check to see if the driver's side engine/trans mount is worn.

That sounds like an issue with the flywheel/pressure plate.

I would check that for damage/looseness first.

Gee spend a fortune checking the least likely thing?
No. If it only does it on a hill then it IS the motor mount wear.
The cables to the transmission are getting twisted enough to lock up the shifting.

So #1 is likely a loose motor mount, then some issue with worn shift linkage.

But it did it in Kentucky. What's that mean. When I go to my daughters I start out in Indiana. Go through a corner in Kentucky. Go through a piece of Ohio and back in Kentucky. The little town I live in one side of the street is Ohio and one is Indiana. The kids. Go to different schools. To complicate things for years one side of the road went on daylight savings time and one didn't

Lmfao! ^^^ That's a lot to take in. And yeah, definitely check that transmission mount on the driver side for wear.

The cable tightness plays no part in locking out of gears.
Yes the cable has a minimum bend radius, but the 2" movement from being worn isn't going to make any difference. Especially considering that loading the engine would also move the mount.


Not knowing how steep these hills are or much else, it is hard to pinpoint the cause.
Things that come to mind would be fluid related, but my mind just can't figure out why or how. Doesn't really make sense as hydraulic pressure isn't that subject to orientation.

So that kinda leads me to think it's load related, which comes back to the post by ImFocusing, in part. If the T/O Bearing is sticking or the slave is sticking, the pressure plate won't disengage the clutch and it'll be difficult to shift. If you rev the engine to around 3,000rpm you should be able to shift W/O using the clutch peddle. And that may also point to a T/O Bearing problem.
This could be as simple as air in the line (bleed the slave) or contaminated fluid.

So I'm going with, you should bleed the brake/clutch fluid first.
That will rule out one possible and cover maintenance that probably hasn't been done.
