Ford Motor Company has introduced a new IDS generated Transmission Control Module adaptive learn procedure that allows for finer tuning of the clutch apply touch points on vehicles equipped with DPS6 transmission. This eliminates the need for physical drive and will allow you to accomplish a better quality repair in a consistent manor - without leaving the service bay. Check out this new IDS feature today.
My car's incompetence with the clutches is second only to the grinding noises on my list of annoyances with this car. I'm going to schedule another appointment for them to apply the new Adaptive Learn Procedure. Maybe I can cut that list by one.

Alas, it doesn't say. It looks like IDS 86.03 should be available today, but when you go to download it only offers 86.01A.

Hmmm - I had my TCM reflashed about two weeks ago - I wonder if this is something new since then?

So the dealer loads the software for you and wipe out whatever the system learned before and start over?

What I never understood (of course I admit I have not researched enough on the subject) is how the adaptive learning works if there are more than one driver (my wife being the primary and I do drive this car too)? What about a rental car?

As far as I know, it is not about the vehicle learning your style of driving, but the DCT "learning" to respond to the computer inputs/acceleration-deceleration...

The giant typo, "manor" doesn't provide me with much confidence that your DCT problems will be going away soon.

Formula 1 cars have electronically-controlled clutches. Before the start of the race, on the grid, the cars do a "clutch bite-point adjustment". Basically the driver keeps his foot on the brake while the computer slowly engages the clutch. When it detects the engine loading down, it knows where the clutch will bite and can better set itself up for launch.

That doesn't directly apply to our cars (F1 clutches are carbon multiplate units controlled by hydraulics and experience fearsome wear on each race start), but it makes sense that somewhere along the line the computer would have to be taught where each of the two clutches will begin to bite. Maybe this new procedure better trains our DCTs. The clutches mechanically auto-adjust for wear, so in theory the factory just needs to train it once up-front.
