Jalopnik's mini-review is pretty scathing:

The 2014 Toyota Corolla Is 2003's Best New Car
Quote:

Why You Should Buy The 2014 Corolla
  • You're the kind of person who doesn't mind getting middle-of-the-range MPG and bottom-of-the-range performance.
  • You're the kind of person who doesn't mind a rough, unsettled ride on broken pavement.
  • You like a car that seems a little flimsy.
  • Quantity is quality.
  • You don't like to break the mould.
  • Groundbreaking design isn't really your thing.
  • For you, "not bad" is good enough

Jalopnik hates pretty much everything and tends to write scathing reviews as click-bait. Not terribly surprised.

Except the Miata. The answer to every car question is always Miata.

They've been quite pleased with a number of cars recently, mostly 100k sports cars. Their rating system is biased towards 5/10 as being average, so a score of high 70s to low 80s is a pretty good score.

Well, it's true. Miatas are fantastic.

I have a pair of cousins who drove a 1990 Corolla. One passed it down to the other and she eventually killed it by crossing the leads on the battery while trying to jump it. It was a very basic car that was great for commuting around Denver, but when each of them grew out of it, they both bought Fords. Then my Aunt sold the Corolla and her Camry to buy a Sebring convertible... I will never know why.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Corolla to die.

I sat in one a few days ago. It was bland and boring, but I like that. It's a simple appliance that will provide a long service life.

She went from one of the most reliable vehicles ever to what was probably one of the least reliable vehicles ever?

Toyota knows it's market very well. Make what is perceived as the most reliable hampster wheel and the hampsters will buy them by the boat load.

It looks good. Reminds me of a Kia Rio Koup. I'd rather have the Kia since the Hyundai I had provided some of the cheapest repairs and parts costs I've ever had. That's what's important from September through June when traffic restricts my gear shifts from first to second and back to neutral.

I had a corolla once. it got stuck in 2" of mud.

I think now that the Corolla is dressed up, it is more difficult to build a sleeper out of it.

This. If a reliable transportation appliance is what you want, you can't beat a Toyota. If you want a car that's fun to drive, Toyota doesn't make those.
