My 2009 focus is overheating.

I checked the thermostat and its working, the fan sometimes kicks on but most of the time it does not.
I am out of ideas here. I have checked the radiator as well just to make sure its not cracked.
Any idea why its doing this?

Cooling fan sometimes kicks on, sometimes does not come on. (possible relay? )

Coolant is fine. Radiator cap is fine.

when you say overheating....describe it.

Is it hot....then you turn the car off and start it back up and it stays hot? Or do you turn it off, sit for about 10 seconds and the car is not hot? Have you burped your system?

how did you test your thermo? are you seeing water circulate if you remove your reservoir cap?

The most common (other than a bad thermo) issue that I have seen over the years is a small air bubble in the coolant that passes over the temp sensor giving a real, but false indication of overheating.

When does it overheat? At idle or cruising down the road?

And how are you testing the t-stat? You are certain its opening?
