Clearance Head for cams w/o having cams

Is there any how to's on clearance for the head to fit larger cams?

I am going to have the head worked by a local shop and while I don't have the cams I will be using I want to clearance the head so i can switch to a stage 2 or 3 with out issues.

Should i just let the shop know i want them to clearance for larger lobes and then hope they know what to do and how much to remove? or do I really need to have a set of cams for them to clearance to?

No way to do so.
You must have cams in hand/head to clearance. That's just how mechanical works.

Was not sure if there was a general rule of thumb on how much clearance is needed. I.e. from the races to the casting needs to be x.xxx" or such...or if there is a remove 20-30 mil from specified areas x, y, and z....

Guess that's not the case.

Guess I will just need to see if a local member has a set of cams they would be willing to let me and my mechanic fit check.

^Still not going to work.
You need the cams you'll be using. There are variations from grind to grind. Yes you may get close, but you still have to check with your cams.

Fine then... Just burst my bubble. :-).

Thanks for the input. What grind for a NA do you recommend? I hear stage 3 is basically the way to go. Stage 1 are worthless and stage two are OK... But 3 is better?

I was thinking that it was the casting that varied and not the cams. The cams should be very close to the same right? Its the un machined surfaces of the head that are not tolerance controlled I thought were the problem.

For the most part it is the head where the variance lie. But there are also machining differences in cams.
Even if they were exactly the same, how would you know?
Exactly, you still have to measure every lobe/lifter.

Yes stage 3. Don't dick around with anything else.


... and wasn't most all this covered with you last year or so, though you already had a built engine?

don't worry, one of my former professors still hasn't had his engine build complete and it's been like 5 years.

That was likely talking about clearance of the windage tray. I am now just getting around to the head.

I have the bottom end all built up just waiting on a C-F-M oil pump then the whole bottom end will be done. I took a brake on the motor to snatch up a SVT rear brake setup. I am now working on getting the top end and the front suspension done.
