Is my car worth upgrading?

So i have a 2010 ford focus se automatic it has 78XXX miles on it with new rims (motegi mr116) and tires. runs great no problems from what i noticed. I was thinking ether selling it and buying something like the mazdaspeed 3. or i was thinking sway bars, turbo with racing exhaust, possible brake upgrades, body kit w/ spoiler. Is my car worth dumping about 10,000 into? im not for sure what to do i already own the focus out right but should i just sell it or upgrade? what do you guys think?

If it were me,i would upgrade what I already have. If you bought a different vehicle, you would just want to modify it also(at least I would).

I don't think your automatic transmission will last long with a Turbo. Just sayin'.

There's a lot to be said for having your car paid off. Would I dump that kind of money into it? No. For the most part going with crazy mods like that just doesn't pay off when it comes time to sell or trade it in.

I would just buy a car with a turbo if that's what you want, and keep the mod-bug to small upgrades as parts wear out. My personal opinion on body-kits is meh. I think most of them look ridiculous. I see people spend so much money on stuff like that, but then can't afford to have the car painted when it needs it or perform basic maintenance. heh.

Better to leave the Focus stock as far as drive train goes, swaybars are a good value and make the car more fun to drive.

Take that $10,000 and put it into a second car fund.
If you spend it on upgrades to a focus, it is gone forever with little to show for it.

I am a big proponent of two cars: the daily driver and the weekend toy

10k is a huge investment honestly and considering the used prices of something like a ms3 (late model, decently low miles) is sub 20k...you could easily make that work by using the 10k you would have invested and selling your car. I think in a year or two you may see used a few of the 2013 st in the sub 20k range too. If anything, perhaps just a bit more cash from yourself depending on what your car could sell for to get something in a different category of car.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for loyalty to one's car and I dislike payments as well but at some point it make sense to go a different route. No one said car modding is logical though and we do it for ourselves not the resale, but just know you'll never see that 10k again. Just look at what folks here sell their cars for with the turbo kits installed. I know dwelling on the "what-if" scenarios has stopped me so far from going turbo on my 05 st, and i only have 45k miles so it'd be a decent candidate if there was one.

I completely agree with what elsolo said, particularly about 2 cars - one everyday car and one toy, but if space isn't an option that can understandably stop you from going that route.

unfortunately your auto tranny won't allow you to really benefit from the turbo system. I think FSWERKS says the auto trannies can only handle <200whp/wtq.

It is paid off & you couldn't replace it, for what a dealer would give you for it. Yeah, you could use it as a down torwards a speed3 or similar & for sure you'd be modding the 3 as there are a lot of upgrades to do on those as well. Heck, I'd even mod a sti, let alone a wrx. For your foci, I'd do simple funtional mods= a header, set of mild stage 1 cams, intake & a tune. Add a frpp's suspesion kit w/ a set of sway bars, add a svt front brake kit w/ ss lines & a set of frpp's wheels w/ a set of 215-45/17 tires. That should make your foci handle & perform pretty good & fun to drive.

Its a bit of a slippery slope to say that the OP would want to mod anything he bought, i personally think that the Mazdaspeed3 is pretty well set from the factory. Besides maybe the wheels.

BUT,

I still think you are better off with your focus. Most used Mazdaspeed3s are pretty beat up (I know, i was recently in the market). I personally ended up in a WRX, but only after a few months of searching for one that wasnt abused. Even still, its a pretty heavy price to pay just to have more power.

It really depends on you. If you really want a faster car, then I say get something newer that is really built for it. (wrx, speed3, evo, etc). Otherwise, Stick with your current focus and put your money into something else.

Keep the Focus for reliable daily stuff and buy a second car/project like a cheap Miata or Mustang.
