what is your price range? 05-07's can be picked up for decent prices and are very reliable.

~ 10-11K.
I am in southern calif and I see a lot of options would prefer relatively newer car with lots of safety feature.
To get the max safety feature, I'd prefer the top of the line/trim

thanks a lot

Well then that narrows your options down to a Nissan versa. Also imho more features makes a car more unsafe...

I'd just get a '03 with a 2.3 duratec like pumpkin svt said, If you want something newer get an 2008-2011 since you can get them with "good" options like power windows and all that non-sense, low miles and modern safety features for around $11k

EDIT:

Actually, my local dealer actually has a 2011 with 28,000 miles, auto trans, coupe, power windows and keyless entry for only $11,200. So if you want modern safety and things, that's actually right in your price range, So I'd look for something like that...

This was my thought as well, but for $10,000ish your looking at a mk2 of some variety

I agree, but MK2 are UGLY, j/k. I would up my price range to get into a MK3 for sure.
