That's funny, I was going to do the same thing on my lunch today, until i realized i didn't have a socket to get the cover off

I am planning on doing this some time anyways, I'm sure it can't hurt anything.

Last thing, I wonder what the comparison would be now between a SRI / CIA vs a K&N drop in along with snorkel delete and having the factory box properly sealed on the intake runners / box....

Result - a bit smoother take off (hard to say anything definite). On the other hand, I drive about 20 miles on the back roads with 20-40 MPH, and the car MPG has increased by about 2 MPG after the modification (to > 35MPG). I did not notice sizable increase while driving on the highway - it is still about 35MPG.
It looks to me that the car engine is sensitive to the incoming air temperature - I will check the filter box for any noticeable gaps.
I am glad that somebody reported this find to the Ford rep - it seems to me like a such simple fix for improving the car economy and drive-ability.
Only one problem, If you or someone has to remove the filter box it will have to be cut off he rubber seal.

Not the lid!!! How would you change/clean the filter later on. Just the tubes under the rubber band.

Read the sticky thread on snorkel delete will explain it.

I know that, already done on my car. By sealed box, i meant simply sealing at the end of the tubes into the rad support and sealing where the tubes go into the box. I agree that sealing the top and bottom of the box would be idiotic at best

My bad when you said you didn't have a socket thought you were going to do the lid, forgot about the tube on the bottom.

It's all good. I did this last night and actually sealed both tubes from the inside of the box, and also pulled the tape off of the intake runner and sealed that with silicone as well.
I only had my drive to work with it this morning, so it's to soon to say if there is any change.

I ended up using mortite rope caulk to seal mine. Goes on easily and can be removed if necessary.

Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using FF Mobile.

I duct taped my 1mm gap last Thursday night. Still had uneven acceleration on Friday.

Then I did the 5 full throttle accelerations over the weekend. Accelerations have been much smoother this week. I still swear by that tactic.

I had seen that posted and tried it as well. Though I don't think its a good long term practice, its my opinion that it burns some glaze off the clutches.
