Sparky, if the dealer is no help, many owners here have gotten great results when they reached out to Crystal, the ford CS rep, here at this board. She gets their cases escalated and I've seen a lot of good outcomes posted here.

That looks really good - just like Ford intended. Some have gaps of 4-5mm on one side or another.

Did my first full tank fill-up post-fix. I got 31.81 mi/gal. My average since owning the car is 30.89. I would say this is within the margin-of-error. It may or may not have helped a bit, but certainly did not hurt.

I discussed this with the service manager at my dealer this morning. He seemed pretty intrigued. Meanwhile they are diagnosing my transmission.

Sent from my Galaxy Note 2 using FF Mobile.

I would think so. It doesn't always have to be a complicated high tech issue.
Cold air intakes are used the world over and the gap desricbed by dans posts and pictures, would be allowing hot air in from the engine compartment.

Subscribed.

Car is currently in getting the transmission/clutch looked at (and hopefully repaired) but will definitely be trying this once I get it back.

I found the same gaps on the air intake tubes. I used some clear silicone adhesive to create a seal around the tubes (I had to remove the rubber gasket and clean it up prior to the adhesive application).
Result - a bit smoother take off (hard to say anything definite). On the other hand, I drive about 20 miles on the back roads with 20-40 MPH, and the car MPG has increased by about 2 MPG after the modification (to > 35MPG). I did not notice sizable increase while driving on the highway - it is still about 35MPG.
It looks to me that the car engine is sensitive to the incoming air temperature - I will check the filter box for any noticeable gaps.
I am glad that somebody reported this find to the Ford rep - it seems to me like a such simple fix for improving the car economy and drive-ability.
