No i don't think they should give up on them but they do need to get down and make a good one. Make them a little more mechanical and not so dependent on computers and they would probably do a little better.

I don't think they should be abandoned but companies need to refine the technology and make it better for the masses and unfortunately the masses want something simple and works in a simple way and there's no reason that DCTs in cheaper cars should be subpar. I've driven the DCT in an EVO and it's much better sorted out then Ford's and is quicker than the manual.

Ford also needs to join the pack and offer proper paddle shifters since that thumb toggle is a joke and requires to much effort to use during spirited driving.

Nope,

they will continue to evolve and improve as time goes on, In 10 years it will be the norm and people wont know the difference anymore..

TBH, 95% of people only need 3 visible gears, P, R and D. Everything else is just for flash and nostalgia. I don't know of anyone who needs to manually shift their automatic.

Reading the Wiki on them, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-clutch_transmission
I'm wondering if it's the wet clutch that's the issue in the Focus. Wet's are very susceptible to contamination and heat.
I'm not sure how much slip is designed into them, but that friction material mixed in the trans fluid could easily screw a bunch of things up; or plug up a filter and now the filter just bypasses.

But by the looks of it, none are US made. So I'm also curious if much of it is programming faults.

I thought that everyone else had wet clutches and Ford's design was a dry clutch which is what made it so remarkable.

Quote:
The Powershift gearbox is a joint development between Ford, Getrag and Luk and was first introduced in Europe. Both Volvo and Ford use wet clutches and hydraulic actuation.[3][4] However, the new PowerShift gearbox used in the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus uses dry clutches and electric motor/solenoid actuation.[2] Some in the media lamented about the transmission feel, this has been improved via a firmware upgrade.[5]

I've seen it elsewhere in early transmission reviews before a vehicle was released. Dry clutch DCTs are smaller, and apparently harder to design. Eventually they will get all the bugs out of it and it will be a great transmission.

Ford uses dry dct in USA and Canada. Europe gets a wet version. The wet is rated at a higher torque level.

The majority of American drivers were taught to drive in retired police-issue Crown Vics. (or something similar)

Until America teaches it's new drivers how to drive new cars, the complaints about DCTs will continue to pour in.

I wonder how much these people with DCT complaints would freak out over SMG transmissions....
