Issues with 2001 Focus ZTS

I have a 2001 ford focus zts, zetec engine. About eight months ago, I had a problem with jumping and hesitation when going uphill, and after replacing the spark plugs and wires, I replaced the coil and the problem went away. About three months ago, it started the jumping and hesitation again(maybe its missing), but it does it at random times, not just going uphill. I also began to get the check engine light. The people at auto zone put the code reader on it and it gives a 0171, lean mix bank one. Since I am getting this with the hesitation/missing, they dont think it is the oxygen sensor. I have also replaced the pcv valve and the fuel filter and tried higher octane gas, no change. Any ideas on what this might be?

maybe plugs?

After looking thru many more posts, I noticed that Bosch plugs may cause a problem. The plugs i installed were Bosch +2's, so i guess i will get some motorcraft plugs and see if that takes care of it. Too bad i didnt see this before i posted.

When was the last time that you changed the fuel filter?

I was going to suggest taking a look at the plugs. For some reason Ford's engines don't like "new style" plugs that have more than a single diode/prong. Also make sure to get platinum and not iridium. Autolites generally work well if you can't find motorcraft plugs.

Use DOUBLE platinum plugs since zetecs use waste spark coils.

And look at the pcv HOSE where it goes around back of motor to plug into the intake manifold, they commonly suck shut or suck a hole to make your lean code mentioned.
