Found a Focus. Needing opinions...

I am looking at a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 Kona Edition.

http://www.charlestonautosales.com/2...-29407/4565511

There are a couple issues.

First, the whole car vibrates. I did some research and found out that it could be the motor mounts. A Ford dealer would charge $500 to replace them. I know they would charge a lot more than a mom and pop place. His mechanic would do 2 of the 3 for $172.

Second, the ABS light on the dash cluster is on. Again, did a little research and saw it could be anything from low brake fluid to needing a new ABS module.

Third, I have circled a plug on this picture.
http://i1093.photobucket.com/albums/...ps38ec8d48.jpg
There is nothing plugged into it, but other pictures I have seen of Focus engines don't even have the plug.

A few other cosmetic things here and there, but those are the biggest things.

On his website, he has it listed at $2750. He would do 2 of the 3 (not the tranny mount) mounts out of his own pocket. He wouldn't do anything about the ABS light. Out the door, he'd do $3100. He said 5% tax and other fees.

Is this a good deal? Is it worth it? I need help figuring this out.

I would make him fix everything first (since a dealer should be wanting to put his best product forward it shouldn't be an issue) then take it for another spin and make sure t is all together. I would also see if he will do factory ford mounts (they are a better mount and since it isn't your dime at this point get the better mount) And make sure he shows you the box (motorcraft if factor) and the old parts in the box. I have seen many shady dealers say they fix something only for it to be a cheap or not as promised fixed. I would say for a small car lot that is probably a decent price. 1st don't be afraid to walk away and 2 if he won't budge on the mounts take it to a trusted mechanic and have them verify it is the issue first.

He should fix everything.

Especially the ABS light, idk if SC has a safety inspection for cars but here in NY it wouldnt pass inspection on that alone.

Motor Mounts are pretty typical not sure why he is saying he will only replace 2 of the 3 mounts...

As for the plug I have no idea, never seen it before. The only thing I can think of is an electric block heater but that might be way off.

Personally if it were me I would keep looking.

I don't see how he won't fix the ABS issue - what kind of dealer would even try to sell something that is unable to pass inspection?

Also, offering to fix two of the three motor mounts is bogus...

Honestly, I would think long and hard about this purchase. At the very least, take it to another trusted mechanic and have them go over it with a fine-toothed comb.

Is he offering any type of warranty, even the type that gives you a few months to make sure nothing has been duct taped together?

I see nothing but trouble from this. The car, in it's current condition, shows that the owner did not keep up with maintenance. I'm not sure what that plug is, but it screams "abuse" to me. I would walk away.

I'd take a mechanic... And have him give you a quote of how to fix those little issues... Give quote to dealer... Tell them to adjust price accordingly or work something out for it..

I'd pass, it's not like Foci are so scarce that you have to buy any particular one.

I would keep looking. The trans mount could be ok, the passenger side and the aft dog bone mount are most definitely shot. I would accept nothing less than all 3 being repaired. Because brake biasing on abs cars is controlled by the abs I would not accept that either. Most likely its just a bad sensor or tone ring.

Also no heat sheild on the stock header is bad news IMO, zetec cars run hot and radiator and thermostat breakage is likely to happen.

He did have the CarFax. According to that, it was purchased new by Ford for a company vehicle. It spent time in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Florida. That sounds likes it a lot of highway miles, which is better than city miles.

The selling it is more of a broker than a dealer. He was pretty set on 2750. We offered 2500 cash and he wouldn't take it. I would like to know the breakdown making the price from 2750 to 3100.

I am going to wait 2 weeks or so till next payday. I'm going to look around while I wait.
