The bumper is slimmer and there aren't any lines on it. Look at the rear deck lid where the bumper meets and you'll see that it only sticks out about 2 inches whereas the U.S. sticks out about 5 inches. These are the kind of subtle differences that can make a car stand out above the rest

I see the difference between US MK1 and Euro MK1 - US one sticks out more and has lines in it. kinda like the Euro front bumper. guess it's hard to notice until you have 2 images side by side to compare. never saw it before! US > Euro, in my humble opinion :P

are you basically suggesting a Euro MK1 conversion?

US bumper = park bench
Euro bumper = slim and sleek

The rear US sedan bumper wouldn't be that bad if the strip wasn't there.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!

After thinking about it at work all day here's a plan I've come up with, let me know what you think:

1) Pick up a set of OEM bumper covers from a junk yard (assuming they are in good enough condition)
2) Shave them, I.E. no place for front licence plate, get ride on all lines on both
3) Add spots for front lower euro fogs and rear reverse lights, different front lower grill and different black diffuser area
4) Get them professionally painted.

As much as I dig the slimmer euro rear bumper, I'm not sure I can afford to take the time and drop as much money on them as I'd like to. I also don't have the money to do a full front end conversion to the MK1 style. I'd really like my car to stand out and maybe do something that not many others have thought about doing. I'm totally down for some hard work and learning how to work on bumpers instead of just buying new ones and taking the easy way out.

Brian, I'm in love with your rear bumper. Do you think it's possible to make that work with an OEM rear sedan bumper? I think I could make it work, but getting the image that is in my head out is becoming increasingly hard to do.
The OEM 2005-2007 rear bumper cover sticks out more than I woud like it to, but it might be interesting to see if I could make it work. I see what you said about the bumper being too square for reverse lights so I might just omit that form the plan, but I'd still like to shave it down and add a diffuser of some sort.

Sorry if this sounds jumbled, I've had a bit to drink and trying to work this all out in my head is forcing my mind to run around in circles. Hahaha

Your idea:

I did the SVT grille because that grille mesh can be found very easy on eBay. I also did the Euro facelift fogs because if you did ST170 fogs, they would look exactly like OEM fogs for your model. Here is a big sheet of SVT mesh:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BIG-FORD-V8-...a3a3df&vxp=mtr

A Euro facelift:

My idea based on the facelift:

Basically get smoked sidemarkers and plastidip the bodylines, paint the bottom back to factory, shave the plate, use Euro facelift fogs and get a Seat Cupra lip. Here is a link to the lip:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-OEM-...cc99d3&vxp=mtr

Same idea, just more shaved:

With grille:

Thanks! Yeah, I like the shaved look too.

You could combine the top portion of your bumper with the lower portion of a Euro bumper and end up with something like this:
