front coil springs and coil insulators
The Focus is roughly the same in this respect for 2006 thru 2011. In the process of replacing wheel bearings and struts, I noticed the former owner installed eibach front springs upside down. They fit in that way pretty nice and did not become dislodged or squeak after several yrs of driving. The smaller diameter on one end of the spring fits snugly in the upper or lower perch, but it belongs down. The large end seats up or down, but it belongs up.
The factory service manual is not clear enough to show which way the spring should be installed. In fact, the manual does not have enough detail to show one end of the spring is a smaller diameter. It also does not show any detail about the sleeve insulators that go on the coils to prevent squeaks.
I wound up visiting a used car dealer lot to see how the spring insulators and springs are installed. This confirmed my suspicions. Will be installing new factory springs, struts and insulators this weekend.
As for sleeve insulator positioning, the lower insulator on the smaller end of the spring should be installed flush with the end of the spring. It is long enough to cover about 3/4 of a coil (270 degrees). This keeps it from rubbing metal on metal against the lower perch.
The upper end of the spring is the larger end. An insulator cap goes on the end and a sleeve insulator should be installed such that it nearly butts against the end cap, maybe within 1/2". It will only be long enough to cover about 1/2 of one coil (180 degrees).
The lower sleeve insulator is a discontinued item. the upper sleeve insulator is not discontinued and it also supersedes the lower sleeve part for use on the lower end. I bought four, they cost about $8 each.
PS: everything mentioned above applies to the front springs for 2006 thru 2011.
