Exclamation New guy with 1st SVT Focus

I need a little help from the masses. I recently bought an '03 SVT Focus 3dr. HB. I love the car and for the last month its been great. Today while driving it began to surge on my way home from work... REALLY surge.... climbing to 5000 Rpm. Every gear, every driving style, did everything I could think of to get it to stop.... the only thing that worked was letting it idle down while in gear. If I depressed the clutch to stop, it would continue to rev without me touching the gas pedal. If I coasted to below 2000 rpms with out touching the clutch it would settle back down to about 900 rpm idle, but it would repeat the surge everytime. ANYONE know WTH this thing is doing?

Are you getting any CELs?

I would check into the IAC valve and check for vacuum leaks

Could also be the IMRC. Do a quick search for IMRC here, there are quite a few threads about it.

i have had a similar issue. still do from time to time. but i know what my problem is, maybe yours is the same.

There are two throttle lines going to your throttle body. on my car, the Cruise Control line has a plastic ring thing that holds it to the throttle body, and from time to time it will fall off when im full throttle and when i let off the gas it gets hung up on the cables hanger and gets stuck revving between 1200-3000 RPM. i just push the tabs back out and stick it back in and my issue is resolved. i need a new bracket for mine to re fasten too.

Hmm ... you can try cleaning your MAF.

Vacuum leak does sound like the main reason that it would be doing that.

You can also find out if your car came with a tune. If it is a factory tune, you can get Ford to re-check it.

Check your throttle positioning sensor.

Thanks All. Out of town until Saturday (Had to drive my F-250). I'll check all those things when I return and report back!

Thanks for the quick input.

Ok, pulled the MAF - It looked like it was spray-painted black so I thought Id found the problem... cleaned it up all shiny again and put it back... things are better but not fixed. Cleaned the engine and air cleaner, checked the throttle cable... still surging uncontrollably - WTF?
