Gas tank recall

Read today about a recall on the Flex , Taurus, MKS and others for faulty seams on the fuel tanks.
What the hell is it with Ford and fuel tanks? Think Pinto.

I often wonder the same about there older automatics used in cars like Escorts and Tauruses and such. All eventually quit going into 3rd gear at some point.

On Pinto technically the fuel tank was not the issue. The fuel filler neck was too short, it simply slipped into a rubber grommet on tank and pulled out easily with any tank distortion. A four inch extension in the tube length could have easily saved many lives. The rear axle had very pointed cover corners which also ripped like knives through the body of the metal tank anywhere they contacted, not just the seams. Thirdly, the spacing allowed there was way too tight so no collision room to avoid contact. Fourth, the rear bumper was made out of tinfoil. Fifth, good ol' Lee Iacocca absolutely refused any and all changes when safety engineers came complaining of the problem after early crash testing. The so-called 'rule of 2000'. His major unbreakable demand was that the car had to come in at $2000 cost and 2000 lb. weight.

The Pinto didn't catch fire anymore than it's contemporaries. It just did so with a car load of girls that got drilled by if I remember right was a truck doing about 50 and the car was sitting still. There's a lot of modern cars today that the same thing can happen. Dodge comes to mind with tanks on some of their cars not to far from the rear bumper.

bringing the pinto into this conversation is irrelevant. The new recall is based on complaints of leaking gas from a fuel line, but no reports of fires. I fail to see how the pinto recall is in any way related.
