Too bad it would have cost more to either convert one car into the other, or to repaint this one to match the last one since Ford dropped the color from the 2013 MY and wasn't painting the ST in the full range of colors to begin with.

I do however love my ST as much as I did the SEL, or else I wouldn't have bought another Focus.
I saw a Frosted Glass Focus passing me from the other direction yesterday, and man, that really is a beautiful color!

The ST sure is seductive, but I think I'm going to stay with my SEL for now, especially since I bought it as a long-distance daily driver (~30,000 miles per year).

I've been thinking of a swap to an ST. My 2012 SE runs great and haven't really had any problems with the DCT. This month it will be 2 years I've had my Focus and I just rolled 32k on the odo. Unfortunately living in a snowbelt state, have to take into consideration how a car will handle the snow. We don't get a lot of snow like we used to back in the 70's, but still, snow is snow. I had a 2006 Dodge Magnum SXT and I had bought some OEM 18" wheels which I would use in the summer and use the 17" wheels in the winter. But it was such a back breaking job to swap out the wheels every season (I live in a second floor apartment).

So a few questions about the ST:

1) How is the ride compared to an SE? Is it pretty harsh with those wheels?

2) How is it in the snow with the stock tires (or is no one crazy enough to run in the snow with the stock wheels/tires?)

3) how is the hwy gas mileage? I mean like purely highway such as on road trips? I'm more concerned with hwy mileage since I drive like 85% hwy miles.

I know I'm not the one you've explicitly asked, but since I've also gone through the transition I'll see if I can't try and answer the questions.

1.Compared to my old SEL the ride is not much different, it's a little bit stiffer than the 16" wheels that it came with stock. I've yet to drive it on the 17" wheels I bought for the SEL in the first place, but the ride seemed better on the SEL with the 17" wheels over the 16" ones since it was less bouncy. It's a little bit firmer, but not uncomfortably so.

2. Do not under any circumstances expect to run on the stock wheels and tires in the winter, summer only tires don't grip well at all when the temperatures hit below 40 degrees, doubly so on snow or ice. The good thing is 16" wheels and tires should generally clear the front brakes (depending on clearance), and can be found cheaply from a variety of cars such as the 03-07 Taurus, et al. I plan on using the 17x7" black pack wheels since I still own them, although they only currently have all season rubber on them, not winter tires. Winter tires will do better in snow and ice. That is if I don't end up storing the car for winter, which I may still do after swapping the wheels as I have a winter beater car also now. You can of course change for all seasons right away and sell the ultra high performance summer tires at the possible expense of some handling if you don't wish to play the game of changing wheels back and forth. I get the feeling due to also living on the second floor at the moment. I did the wheel swap myself on the SEL to put it back to stock, it was definitely a work out.

3. Depending on vehicle speed and what not, pure highway miles (minus on ramps/ off ramps) I've seen around 32mpg at 70 mph. Currently averaging closer to 28.x mpg over just under 10,000 miles in ~6 months in mixed city and highway driving.

With winter on the way, it's a bad time to be thinking about a ST (unless perhaps you live in Florida or SoCal).

I picked up my ST last January and with a set of winter tires it handled the New England winter just fine.

No it's not, fundamentally it's a Focus, so with decent all season or winter rubber it will claw through snow and ice with the best of them should you be so inclined not to have a second car to only subject to that abuse..

Anytime is a good time to consider the Focus ST, as long as you can budget for storage or a proper second set of rubber.

You are right, it should be fine with the right tires.

However, considering the expense and hassle of changing the wheels/tires shortly after purchase, I would be more inclined to wait until spring.
In other words, the timing could be better.
