Tire Rack Recommended size...?

I'm in the market for new wheels and tires for my MK3. Looking at doing 17" with some weight savings. Hopefully a 17x7.5" wheel.

The Tire Rack recommended size for this wheel is a 215/50-17. I am wondering how hard and fast that recommendation is for tire size.

I am looking to put 225/45-17 on the wheel because that's the widest wheel that the STF class allows in SCCA. (STF allows a 17x7.5" maximum with a 225 width max).

Thanks for your help in advance!

I would be good with the 225/45R17 on the 7.5" wheel. We recommend the 215/50R17 because it's closer to the OE height on the 16's and a bit taller (smoother ride) The rim width range on the 225/45 would be anything from 7" to 8.5" so you are more than fine running that size.

Not unless you are below ET30 or so. I'm running that size of SS-595's, which are notoriously wide, on ET33.

Better have lots of lowz though. This is with Pro-Kit springs though I should be lower soon-

I would almost rather see you with a 225/40R18 and keep you closer to the stock 16" OE height.

The DMACK Tarmac tires only come in 215/40/18

But there should not be any rub? The sparco Asseto Gara wheels are et45 I believe.

Nowhere remotely near rub. If anything it will be near the OEM tire placement on the standard 18" wheels with 235/40's width-wise and somewhere around 8mm shorter from tire to fender.

Correct, the 225 would be wider and taller so you are good. And with the Sparco ET45 18X8" wheels, you are just fine.
