Fan settings 1, 2, 3 not working.

Hi all,

My Focus (2001, 1.6 hatch) has developed a blower issue. Settings 1, 2, and 3 will no longer work. After about half an hours running they all then blow a consistently weak stream of cold air, but otherwise nothing. Setting 4 works fine, although the AC doesn't seem to work when I switch to 4, whereas it does on the other settings.

I've had a look around online and the most common solution to this I've found seems to be the replacement of the blower resistor. Before I go ahead and order one though I thought I'd flag it up, just to see what people think.

I remember finding something somewhere that said fan setting 4 runs on a separate circuit to the others, so if the fuse is gone on the resistor the first three settings won't work but setting 4 will. I can't for the life of me remember where I read that though, so I thought I'd play the safe option.

Has anyone had this issue before / know how to rectify it? For the record, the Ford garage quoted me around 80 inc VAT.

Chris.

IMO, it sounds like the fan resistor. You are on the right track about Speeds 1 - 3 going through the resistor pack, and setting 4 bypasses it, but IIRC they are on the same fuse/circuit. I would look at your local auto parts stores or online. Make sure that you have the pack installed in the duct work before using it, as it requires the air flow to keep it from burning up. Look in the How-To Section, I believe I saw a How-To for replacing it. Good Luck.
