Focus misunderstood

I've recently come back to Focus ownership. I've owned better and lesser cars. They're all fun. The one thing that always happens when I own a Focus again is dealing with the number of people that dislike them for, well, I don't know where the negative perception comes from. People didn't like my SVT, ZX5, and now the ST.

What's with the bad wrap? They do have their little idiosyncratic, such as wheel bearing and alternator consumption, but not that big of a deal. They drive well, come in a million different shapes and options. They're cheap to operate. The suspension design is great.

I don't really understand. The benefit from this public misconception is that cars and parts are cheap.

Nobody likes the guy who's good at everything.

I'll add that when people hear I've got a Focus they kind of make a face until they see it or ride in it and then they're impressed that it isn't terrible. It really only takes one bad example to tarnish an image and when SO many people see SO many bad examples over a 13 year span, it often leads them to the wrong conclusion.

While I had my Mustang I can't tell you how many times I'd seen some 1999 ZX4 in some awful color with body damage, oxidized headlights, 14" mismatched wheel covers, ducttape taillights, with a trailer hitch and thought "Gross. Ford Focus is the worst car ever."
But now that I don't have a Mustang I'm noticing a lot more terrible Mustangs and thinking "Jesus Christ I drove one of those for how long!?"
MY Mustang wasn't bad. MY Focus isn't bad, but it only takes one to change your perception.

People just dont like to fix anything. Americans are used to over-refined, automobiles. They expect them not to break ever never ever. If one thing goes bad then its a POS for ever.

Most people from "better" cars/makers will look down on them just because it's a Ford; lets face it, ford didnt put too much money into the niceties/refinements and it was a budget model (base model/price for the focus was pretty affordable.) Ford also has created some lemon like quality cars in the past. Both of those things are hard to change the general perception on. You have driven the top of line models too, so you have seen what can be done in that setup. Now if you owned a base SPI that went to crap on you and then jumped ship to a different brand/make, you might have a different perspective too.

Most people also havent driven one or realize that they can be fun cars, especially with the right mods. Plenty of people are this way (I am with certain cars that ive never driven or owned.) We like to classify, its in our nature. Give your friends that are nay sayers a little drive along, after a couple of turns or a good on ramp, they tend to change their tune some.

Coming from a 2008 GT and then a 2012 V6, I can sort of relate. But I tend to dislike any car that's not maintained regardless of make or model. I've seen many mangled foxbodies and just want to cry into a pillow at the injustice of it all. Even riced out SVT Focuses make me sad.

I think there's a bigger assumption people make about cars. There are many people out there, like myself, that want to live below our means. I've had $500 car payments and lived on the edge of my means. Lately, however, I love to have some space in my finances to enjoy financial responsibility and other hobbies. I think everyone assumes that we drive the MOST of what we can afford and that simply isn't the case. Too many times, it's happened where I couldn't go to a concert, roadtrip, whatever, because of a stupid car payment or otherwise.

Cheap and cheerful is the way for me.

If it makes you feel better, tons of people call the Focus the Fu@#us.

I have a friend who bought a Focus the first year it came out. He didn't maintain the car like he should have and the engine blew. Now he will never buy another Ford.

Does anybody agree with me that the quality of the Focus got better when they moved assembly of the Focus back to Wayne, Michigan? I think the quality of the Focus was horrible when they were assembled in Mexico.

I grew up with Ford Escorts and when I met my wife few months later her car died and we bought an escort, used of course. Then I noticed except they zx2 they stopped making the escort and started on the Focus.

I figured if a car can be as cheap and reliable as the escort and the focus replaced that, taht's what I get. I guess I got lucky but in 02 I bought an 00 Focus SE sport package that had the zetec, so never had the issue that SPI's had. Came with 36k miles.

I sold it with 200k on it for $800. I loved it. Why I just bought another one.

They are cheap to maintain, reliable and from what I've found if you have the Duratec engine it's even better.

I mean 03 SE wagon with 86k for 3.2k? They are cheap but to me last forever.

Now I didn't fix cars/work on them till I was like 31, i'm 34 now. Wish I had started much sooner. I truly enjoy it, and it's so much cheaper. LIke if I had more money in life, I'd totally build a garage with a lift whole nine yards now. When over 3 years ago, changing my oil, replacing breaks was about all I would do and couldn't imagine people who love working on cars love cars in general. a car was a tool to get around.

Now it's different for me, but I still love the focus. I mean my wife loves her PT cruiser but I hate working on it. Everything is so compact, you have to remove like 10 things to fix 1 small problem. But even the wagon is nice looking, handles extremely well, and is easy/cheap to fix.

So I dont' know the hate. I don't buy new, i know there are others like me, but non I know. People can't understand my adversion to buying new.

Plus who DOESN"T like the look of the new ST? With the 6 speed manual. turbo charged, with 250+ horses, looks awesome. It's the first time I've actually thought about buying a new car for that car.
