Curious Question regarding Traction Control

Ok, so I've owned an SVT Focus for the better part of close to 11 years now. My first SVT was a 2002 and did not have Traction Control of any kind when I bought it brand new. That '02 SVT is now no longer with me. (accident killed her) I bought a very nice, super clean 2004 SVTF to replace my baby, and am so far very happy with this particular car.

It has always been my understanding though, that the '03 and '04 SVTs came with factory TC, and that you could semi turn it off via the button on the console. Well, I first noticed this when I transferred my Steeda Tri-Ax to this new car, but there is no TC button on my center console. Does this mean that my '04 SVTF came from the factory with out Traction Control?

It would make me very happy if this car never had TC when it rolled off the line. I have driven cars with traction control, cars with out traction control, and cars that semi-shut off (but not entirely) traction control. I feel that having the traction control prevents me from being able to drive a car at it limits. (I have formal driver training, and used to race a 1980 BMW 320i when I was younger) Even in cars where you can partially disable the traction control, I find that when you start getting near the limits the electronic nannies kick in and squelch the action. I even had traction control try to control the vehicle (while TC was in a stand by mode) at the worst possible time and was not very pleased with the resultant effect of what happened. Given my personal experiences with different cars that have traction control, I would much rather own a vehicle that did not have traction control of any kind.

So my question is this, in 2004 were you able to buy a SVTF that did not come with traction control as standard equipment? Was traction control part of a specific package? The options I have on my 2004 are a moonroof and HID's. The car did not come equipped with the audiophile system, nor did it come equipped with the winter package.

Traction control was part of the winter package is if remember correctly so you very well could not have it.

Interesting question. My 2004 SVT with EAP, was #7 off of the production line for 2004, and it has traction control. The switch will only turn off the TC at speeds over 25 mph I believe. As the European Appearance Package (EAP) included the winter package, that might have been trigger.

Nevin W is correct, at least according to the 2004 SVT sales brochure. If there isn't an "off" button on the center console, there isn't T/C (unless a previous owner swapped or removed the original console). Therefore, it appears that your wish has come true.
It seems to me that you could confirm this by launching hard on a wet or, better yet, sandy road or parking area. If the car does have T/C, you will know it immediately.
My '04 Euro has T/C, and it is a huge hindrance driving on ice and snow.

I would do a fat smokey burnout in it, but it desperately needs a timing service and I could just see me doing that bog smokey burnout and that would be when the t-belt would fail. I found (in the mess of paper work the PO gave me when I bought the car) the original window sticker, and it does NOT list traction control as an installed option. That makes me so happy!!

You would think that traction control might actually help somewhat in the ice and snow. I just can't imagine how much of a nightmare it would be driving up the road to my place if it were snowy/icy. I live up a relatively steep in places, winding mountain road, and if I had to deal with a some thing like that I would not want to go home. I have no problem driving the car in snow and ice, and actually managed to do halfway decent climbing my mountain road in the ice & snow with SUMMER tires on. There was a lot of tire slip and no handling whatsoever, but it did make it up.

Not all 03-04s had TCS, only the cold weather package cars included TCS, the EAP has all of the options so it has TCS by default. The EAP was only offered in 03-04.

My mini sig might throw you off, some dealer didn't reinstall the block heater when the engine was replaced before I owned it. A few years ago I swapped the ABS/TCS control unit for a ABS only and my car doesn't have TCS anymore. I made sure I got the corresponding ABS-only control unit for my year.

I cant remember anymore, but I think the TCS icon will illuminate for a sec when you turn the key. That will tell you if you have TCS or not also.

I was able to confirm it. The car I bought miraculously does not have traction control. It didn't even cross my mind to ask the guy when I looked at the car.

Only other curiosity I have with this new '04 SVT is if it has the wiring for the audiophile sound system? It came from the dealer with standard audio on and the PO upgraded to a Kenwood HU an alpine front speakers. He kept his Kenwood HU and I installed my 9006 from my old car, but it sounds like poo. I suppose that's the combination of the alpines up front and cheapo base speakers in the back. I still have my audiophile speakers, but am also considering picking up an audiophile 8" enclosure, do not know if there are wire that are pre-run for the system or not. I figure that Ford may have run the wires for all the cars and those that did not get the audiophile package just don't come with the upgraded components. I won't assume anything on these cars, because my assumptions with SVTF's usually end with me looking like an ass.

Look behind the driver side carpet in the "trunk". My '05 ST came with the sub/amp harness already installed, even though it wasn't equipped with the Audiophile package at the factory. If you have it, and are interested, I have a sub/amp with carpet and SVT front speakers available.

I just bought an '03 SVTF. It has the "Euro" package, and heated mirrors / seats. Would that imply that it has the cold weather package? Precisely where would I find the traction control switch, if indeed my car does have one? It has two cup holders in front, and two in back. I don't know what else there is on the console.

It's right between the seats. Easy to find, even easier to over look.
