Shifting issue

Ok, so I have an 05' mk1 I just purchased. First adventure in the Focus World BTW. Definitely liking the car so far. pretty fun to drive even though its stock. Here's the problem that i'm having that is fairly new to me but i'm not sure if this is common with these cars or not.

When driving casually I can shift into 3rd gear and it shifts smooth with no issues at all.

When driving "aggressively" it will grind a small amount just at the end of the shift. I've tried depressing the clutch pedal more thinking I was short changing the clutch. Tried a different way of engaging the gear. It appears the only thing that prevents it is slowing down the shift. Could it be the shift linkage is just worn out?

Because of the car having 112k and feeling like they are worn out/too soft for my liking. The first two things I'm looking at doing to the car are suspension (still undecided since it appears H&R is no longer producing their cup kit for this car) and a SSK w/solid shift inserts. Think the SSK w/inserts will solve this issue?

Thanks,
Tom

I start by making sure the trans fluid is full and in good condition. If you have any doubts i'd change it using the Ford stuff. That being said, its not a racing transmission so if you force it, too fast, it will probably grind.

I understand its not a racing transmission. I shift 1,2,4 and 5th at the same speed and dont have this issue. I'll have to check the fluid. I think its old anyways, based on how it acts when cold. its not being forced into gear. it engages just fine I just hear it grind a small amount when going into 3rd.

Grinding going into 3rd is a common issue for the Focus.

I would guess it is the linkage. I have never had this problem in my 05, and I drive aggressively more than not. The MTX75 (trans) is strong and can handle whatever you can throw at it. I don't baby mine. I think yours needs adjustment or replacement of the linkage or shift cable.

Both my 2003 ZX5 and current 2005 ST will make a little crunch when shifting very fast at redline into 3rd. It's just part of the Focus charm.

Mine doesnt crunch or grind at high rpm into any gear. Then again I change my trans fluid and filter regularly. Might be bad/wrong fluid, or as street focus said bad linkage or cable.
