There was/is a series of AC compressors used in certain truck chassis that beagan using a teflon seal. The seal would fail and basically get burnt up with oil making a lovely mess in the refrigerant. The compressor could lock-up. This could lead to running issues like you've described.
Just one of those things I saw somewhere and didn't let go. Not positive Ford or their OEM extended this design feature to the smaller compressors.
Isn't it a lovely time of the year that you could go without AC or defrost for the rest of the week.
Set some sealant and let it seup a little before tightening the rack back down. Or try that messy butyl tape, eww.
