Challenge: Can you beat the Diagnostic?

Hi friends,

I'm not sure how to best get help here.. all help APPRECIATED!

Paid $140 for a Diagnostic at Firestone. They can not find anything...

I'll drive along, and the engine starts to cough, lose power.

The car actually just chokes out and dies.

But, if I massage the gas pedal just right.... force a lot of fuel in there.. it picks up and ZOOOOM! takes off with SO MUCH power.


When it starts to cough, the only *certain* solution is to pull over, switch ignition to OFF, start it right back up, and it's good as new for a day or two.

what exactly did the diag check for?
are you blowing smoke of anykind out the rear?

I would make sure you don't have a collapsed PCV hose or a vacuum line of that sort. Many times when the hose gets hot it collapses or it has a hole in it that opens up when soft. I would check over all your vacuum hoses.

It was a "full electronic diagnostic" meant to pulls codes from computer; a scanner is plugged into obd 2 port; spits out why check engine is on
ran data stream from there; when it peaks etc.

okay so we know of no codes. i agree with donzilla on the vac lines. check those esp with 105k on the clock.

Maybe a bad connection/wire to the fuel pump, or coil pack?

Well, you asked and it has started, or get ready to throw a stream of parts at the problem.

Last three posts bring up good points. If you are idling fine all the time then disregard any vacuum leak suggestions. If you are NOT idling fine then a big mistake not mentioning it.

Just because you show no codes means nothing, often something happens and not logged as a fault yet since the computer has not made up its' mind what to do with it. They may well be logged as pending codes which many readers will not read.

Can't imagine paying for code reading when it's free in so many places now. You could've bought your own reader for that price.
