SPI/Zetec Injectors the same?

Hi all,

My girlfriend has a '99 Escort (2.0 SPI SOHC) with 190K on it that has been coming up with a "system too lean" code every once in a while. I replaced the fuel filter but it's still having problems. When driving at highway speeds, it doesn't noticeably shudder, but the cat heats up and starts to give off a pollution smell. Having checked and not found any major leaks in the intake, I've come to the conclusion that one of more of the injectors may be clogged and needs to be replaced.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds valid? And if so, has anyone else experienced this? I would like to grab some used injectors off the forum if possible but as we all know, SPI parts are hard to find. I have heard that the Zetec and SPI motors used the same injectors. Is that true?

Thanks as always,
--Joe

from what I could find in a search, it does not seem like they are interchangeable.

best thing to do is try and find the problem before buying parts for it. I have seen intermittent lean codes cleared up by cleaning the MAF. Does not explain the cat smell, if they are related.

I would try cleaning the MAF, and the injectors, and see if that helps at all.

I did clean the MAF sensor and it did make a difference in how the car ran, but this issue has worsened since then.

How would I go about cleaning the injectors?

There are fuel cleaner additives you can just put in the fuel, but I doubt that will help at this point (but it is a cheap thing to try).

You can also buy kits to clean the injectors yourself at a local auto parts store. I do not have personal experience with them, but it is something to look into.

hope that helps.
