Your post: (c) All lamps and reflectors visible from the front, sides, or rear of a vehicle, except headlamps, may have any unlighted color, provided the emitted light from all lamps or reflected light from all reflectors complies with the required color. Except for backup lamps, the entire effective projected luminous area of lamps visible from the rear or mounted on the sides near the rear of a vehicle shall be covered by an inner lens of the required color when the unlighted color differs from the required emitted light color. Taillamps, stoplamps, and turn signal lamps that are visible to the rear may be white when unlighted on vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1974.

Also this is for California, every state has it's own DOT statute that must be followed. Ever wonder why headlights from other countries do not have side rfectors in thier lights? Because the US requires them, or placed elsewhere on the front of the car. MK1 Foci have them in the bumper cover for this reason. BMW and Mercedes, do this as well.

Do as you wish, but be for warned that other companies have gone down this road and lost lots of money due to fines levy'ed on them by state and federal DOT. This is the reason I copied the link to Dope Inc. APC was another company that got hammered as well as FK.

Also lighting reflective requirement does not indicate Amber for the front.

"SUBCHAPTER E. GENERAL LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS FOR VEHICLES

547.3215. USE OF FEDERAL STANDARD. Unless
specifically prohibited by this chapter, lighting, reflective
devices, and associated equipment on a vehicle or motor vehicle
must comply with:
(1) the current federal standards in 49 C.F.R. Section
571.108; or
(2) the federal standards in that section in effect,
if any, at the time the vehicle or motor vehicle was manufactured.

Added by Acts 1997, 75th Leg., ch. 324, 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1997.

547.325. REFLECTORS REQUIRED. (a) Except as
provided by Subchapter F, a motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, or
pole trailer shall be equipped with at least two red reflectors on
the rear of the vehicle. A red reflector may be included as a part
of a taillamp.
(b) A reflector shall be:
(1) mounted at a height from 15 to 60 inches; and
(2) visible at night at all distances:
(A) from 100 to 600 feet when directly in front of
lawful lower beams of headlamps; or
(B) from 100 to 350 feet when directly in front of
lawful upper beams of headlamps if the vehicle was manufactured or
assembled before January 1, 1972.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995"
This is for the REAR not the side.

Headlight covers do not render the vehicle unserviceable, like an non-DOT headlamp would. Welcome to the world of federal technicalities, and compliance. It is a lot more complicated than just getting in some parts for sale from overseas and selling them. I know, I have done this a few times, way back when the Focus came out in 1998.

Since your in Indiana, here is Indiana's DOT requirements, and it clearly states amber reflector on the front side.

IC 9-19-6-8
Clearance and marker lamps and reflectors; color displayed or reflected
Sec. 8. (a) A front clearance lamp, marker lamp, and reflector mounted on the front or on the side near the front of a vehicle must display or reflect an amber color.
(b) A rear clearance lamp, marker lamp, and reflector mounted on the rear or on the sides near the rear of a vehicle must display or reflect a red color.
(c) A lighting device and reflector mounted on the rear of a vehicle must display or reflect a red color, except as follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) The stoplight or other signal device may be red, amber, or yellow.
(2) The light illuminating the license plate must be white.
(3) The light emitted by a back-up lamp must be white or amber.
As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.7.

Do not get mad at me for trying to help you stay out of trouble, I do not write the regulations. If you do not like them then you need to contact your state DOT and petition to have the statute changed.

Regardless, all states have their own laws about the Reflectors. The lights can be sold with 2 versions of reflectors to affix to the side of the headlight.. one amber and one that reflects white... it would be the responsibility of the Purchaser to affix them to abide by local laws...

I did read that, but if you have ever lived here, half of the older vehicles are missing light assemblies or are taped together, and they cop could care less... but as I stated in the most recent posts... we will have them included with the headlights from SMC and from RDC

Now THAT sounds like a professional answer. I think you have realized my post was not a personal attack, but a informative post on regulations and how they can ruin and good idea and business venture.

Jonny Law does not care about "the others that jumped off the bridge also", he caught you, and you get to "pay the piper".

BTW I was stationed in Indy for a while.

How are the side reflectors going to work? Will they just be a sticker that either gets placed on outside of housing?

We hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. Happy belated Father's Day too!

We certainly realize that sans the reflector that these do not meet DOT requirements for reflectors. This is the very reason we're selling them as "off-road use only" and will continue to do so. However, we will be providing options for the customers to have reflectors on the front of their cars.

The following options will be available:

- RDC custom vinyl reflectors
- Reflective vinyl tape
- Stick-on reflectors (available at most automotive stores)

These options will be available for the customer to choose from and then it'll be at their discretion to which option is utilized and how it is employed.

While we understand that the majority of our customers will not only NOT use any of the options and do not care, there are those that will use them and do care. We're trying to provide viable options to those customers.
