I wonder why they used a silver top bottom and a black top head? I understand why one might use black top (better flow?) but what's with the silver top?

I've always thought of doing this if something happened to my car... But carbureted on my focus? Nah! Sounds boss though

Black top = zetec
Silver top = SVT/ST170.

They used the silver bottom for the oil squirters, nothing more. Rods/pistons and such are not stock.

silvertop zetec are the early version of the blacktop zetec we're used to. They came with aluminium valve cover and were used in Europe long before the focus existed. Than they changed to blacktop when they introduced the focus

Maybe he already had the silvertop engine laying around.. and swapped the blacktop head for more performance, just as we would swap an svt head on a zetec instead of using a whole svt engine...

I bought the mag on my tablet, finally! I found a use for the thing!

Yes I think black tops and silver tops are both zetecs like you said... It says both use the same crank, the silver top block is slightly stronger and the oil filter is on a separate alloy housing, while as the black top is of course cast to the block.

To be honest I'd choose the silver top just for the oil filter being placed differently, LOL...

From what I gather he is using a factory crank, however it's re-balanced(?)... Aftermarket pistons, rods, cams, dry sump, all that fun stuff.

So well balanced that is is so smooth that it's boring.

Yuou will find people here in europe that build zetec engines with 240 up to 300 bhp in N/A engines :) http://www.ricwood.com/zetec.html

HI! Greetings from Norway...
We use the silvertop engine because it is stronger, but we put the blacktop cyl.head on it because of the preformance and the hydraulick valve system on the silvertop is not reliable......

For the US guys

Silver Top = Coutour , ZX2 / Escort , Mondao

Black Top = later ZX2 / Escort , ZX3 / Focus

I havent seen anyone with 300hp NA do you have any dynos , I can see the 240 I did an engine for a guy way back in early 2000 with 232 HP to the wheels but it had to have race fuel , If we could of done ITB would of made another 25-40hp still a good bit from 300 to the wheels when your talking NA

Sorry dont have any dynopapers on 300 bhp engine (on the flywheel...)
But theese guys http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listin..._to_300hp.html claim they can build it...
and other companys.. but we also got higher octane on the pumps here... the gaz company shell delivers 98 oct. on the pumps here...
not shure how much that matters but...

To build even a 240HP engine you would need at least 108 octane

Ahh flywheel , never cared much for fly wheel # you can manipulate them to easy and the car doesnt run on the flywheel

What compression you building for your 240hp engine , This also at the fly why ?
