He is the one who made the oil cap. The question asked in an earlier post was how big the aluminum one was. Picture was just to show what I was building.

Thanks. Just found out the opening is 2.5" so it shouldn't be a problem.

Well sorry folks. I'm a bit miffed from the email I just got:

Well, at any event here is where we are for pricing. This panel is large, uses a lot of material as it is already, and is difficult to produce. Explain this to these people, they have no idea how complex this part is already with the multiple bends.

@ 10pcs produced, aluminum, powdercoated finish - $85 each
@ 20pcs produced, aluminum, powdercoated finish - $82 each
@ 50pcs produced, aluminum, powdercoated finish - $79 each

That is as good as its going to get.
Making the panel any larger will drive the costs up. If these people are still on board, then let me know. Otherwise I am going to do 1 run of 10pcs to sell myself online to ebay and other places, and that may be it.

I told him that would more than likely kill the deal. First he was talking of being in the same price range as the plastic OEM one, then it went up slightly for powder coating , and now this. I apologize for getting people's hope up, mine included. I told him the price I wanted to stay around, and he said that was doable, so I was hoping for the best. I'm sorry for the changes. If anyone is still interested let me know, and if you don't please let me know that as well.

That's too rich for me. Too bad that guy doesn't recognize an opportunity when it falls in his lap. His email reeks of arrogance. I'm out.

Here's his response after coming here and seeing my post:
Don,
Please understand that it is not my intention to mislead anyone, but I just got the quote from the metal manufacturers this morning and that is what I sent you. This panel costs about $15 more per piece to make over the MK1 panels due to the increase in material size and additional laser cutouts. I'm figuring about $10 per piece for powdercoating, and thats with my awesome discount. I can't make wine on a beer budget if that is what these dreamers are wishfully thinking. I can't make the panel both larger to cover more of the engine, and still even get close to the $70~ range.

Thanks,

Maybe the material price went up from when he last got a quote, I don't know. But I'm sorry for everyone who showed an interest. Maybe someone else will pick up on this fumble and make it happen for the group.

I don't need one, as I have the OEM cover, but while the price is high, aluminum is not a cheap material, it is probably $40-50 for raw material and powdercoating, not including the labor to make it and profit. Not saying it isn't possible to do at a lower price, but it isn't a rip-off. The cheapest way to do engine covers would be fiberglass, but is labor intensive.

It wouldn't have been so bad had I not been lead to believe that the project could be done for around the cost of the OEM piece, and the first prices he told me, and I posted here were in that range. But then today to be told they would be costing an additional $20 was just too much. I mean if I were in the business of doing things like this, I would have a pretty good idea what my materials and labor costs were before quoting prices.

Yeah I agree that them saying one price upfront and then it costing 30% more does suck.
