Definitely a quirky little transmission. I tend to take it easy and have mostly straight highway roads around me, and I average about 29 mpg. My notes:
  • For 30 mph cruising, I use 4th.
  • Cruising above 45, I use 6th.
  • I tend to shift around 3-3.5, give or take depending on urgency. I tend to skip 5th a lot.
  • For highway passing, 4th is the go-to gear, 3rd is the gotta-pass-now gear, and 2nd is the Jesus-H-Christ-get-out-of-my-way gear.
  • My favorite shift is from 3rd-4th. It just feels nice.
  • I hate how the emissions elves and dual mass flywheel make the revs blip then sloooowly fall in between shifts. I swear I spend more time between gears than in them because I like to rev-match my upshifts.
  • Clutch feel and progression is honestly my favorite of all the stick cars I've driven. Or maybe it's just that I'm most used to it.

Ive found that the SVT gets the best milage right around 2900-3000rpm if you hold it consistantly. Take a long road trip, cruise control it at 65-70, and you can see over 35mpg if conditions are right. I managed to get 40 once.
I take care not to chug it, I used to drive at 3k, but I've tried keep town cruising RPM between 2400-27K for a few months and it has gotten me a lot more consistent MPG. If I need to pass or go up an incline I'll down shift of course.

My old car had super long 2.73 gears with a 5-speed, I figured out that 5th gear was only efficient if I was cruising well above 90mph. So I never used 5th gear... I kinda went from a 4-spd to a 6-spd

I hauled ass trying to get somewhere on a road trip and I had to stop for gas on the way there. I tried an experiment did 60 mph on the way home, letting people pass me the whole time, and I sill had over a quarter of a tank left to drive around town. I wish I could've emptied that tank on the highway to find out what the MPG was.

I get 29 mpg shift at about 3500 for normal driving! if I need to get up to speed fast about 4500 rpm and shift really fast from gear to gear, above 65 6th is sweet i get from 60 mph to 80 or 90 really fast, but I drive it like I stole it lol.
1st is really tall but still pulls hard in it hit second and I'm gone :D. shift at 7500 and she screams and the VTEC guys get out of my way quick! lol.
The car just hauls ass and keeps on pulling to 135 mph which is the fastest I have taken her and still pulling hard with 1500 rpm still left in her.
It is the best 4 cylinder NA car I have ever driven period, anyone that rides wants to buy her from me! and it is not for sale! lmao

I'm annoying.

Unless I'm feeling extremely....speedy...I shift around 2k - 2.4k through all the gears when I'm doing a lot of city driving. Trying to do my best to get the max MPG. Whenever I try to drive shifting at the proper points I can watch my gas tank drain like a *.

~2k shifts seems to be the only way to make the tank last longer than 7 days.

I do let this thing go wild though. Played around with an RX-8 and an older A4 and was tons of fun. I wish I could let this thing go more often but at 170k miles and (as far as I can tell) still on the stock clutch....which I can feel slip above 4.2k....

Oh well, I don't speed often, I rarely go WOT. I keep at 65 on the highway (best MPG), all the way on the right lane. Keep to the speed limits on the streets....even on the turns ;) most fun handling car I've ever driven.

I will say, however, I HATE how this engine doesn't want to drop revs. It makes the drive so boring having to wait for engine to match speed/gearing so the car doesn't lurch around.

Why have a car that takes premium fuel for fuel economy? I drive it like you stole it. Until you decide to do a turbo project like i did in which lands it sitting in my driveway for the last 3 years lol. Maybe once I get this turbo project done ill be able to redline 6th.

when driving around, not in a rush, i'll upshift around 2700. (trying to be really efficient ill shift at 2k.) but then i get tired and get it up to 7400. i tend to upshift quickly and travel in 6th unless the road gets winding.
