Dome light redundancy?

On the SE w/201a and moonroof, you get a button on the overhead console that turns all of the interior dome lights on as well as the ambient lighting. You also get a switch on the driver's side dome light that can turn all of the interior dome lights on (but not the ambient at the same time). Why the redundancy? I wonder why they didn't put the map lights on the overhead console?

2013 Ingot Silver Focus SE HB manual, 201a, winter pkg, moonroof. Snorkel delete/K&N drop-in and a bunch of little stuff. Great sticker placement.

The button on the overhead console is a part of the ambient lighting option. If you don't have ambient lighting, you don't have that button. It's made to turn on the ambient lights to white and the dome lights on. They probably didn't want to make two different dome lights for separate cars.

On a side note, If you have the dome light set to "always off" which I do, you can press the ambient lighting "all on" button and the lights will just turn white, leaving the dome light off.

The all on including ambient lighting is called "Search Mode" according to the manual. It's handy on night time road trips with kids and black interior.
