What were they thinking? Improvement.
Updating is good, but it would have been nice if it were engineered to be backward compatible.

It's not really a factor of being backward compatible. It's a factor of being able to update the multifunction display.

I agree that it would have been great if Ford had the forethought to include a method of updating the multifunction display with new software when they designed the car.

That's what I mean. I see this as one of several possibilities:

1) The display is coded onto non-flashable ROM, so the only way to "upgrade" is to replace the trip-computer chip with another one that is coded to display in the four tiles

2) The display is coded onto flashable ROM, but coded in such a way that there is no mechanism to flash an update

3) The display is coded onto flashable ROM, but Ford's roadmap does not include coding a Flash update to change the Job 1's trip computer to match.

I wonder though, if it's possible to check the part numbers for the trip computers for Job 1 vs Job 2; this way we can tell whether there's any hardware difference between the two models. If there is, then we're SOL. If there isn't, is there a way to beg and grovel for an update?

I will pull my cluster tonight and get the part number. I have a Job 1 car.

"pull my cluster" doesn't sound quite right.

Job 1 2012 is potentially different from Job 1 2013.

There were two seperate job numbers/ periods in 2012, as well as an additional two more in the 13 MY.

True. I will pull it anyway, can't hurt to have the part number from a 2012.

Do you have the monochrome display or the full color one? I believe some of the 2012s had monochrome displays right?

EDIT

OR

OR
There are two different versions of the 4" screen, at least in terms of software, and then there were also two different monochrome screens, the smallest and simplest on the S, then the base SE got a basic monochrome trip computer, the SE/SEL with Sync W/myford got the 4.2" full color LCD with a blue color scheme, and then the MFT display like the 2012 Ti and SEL had as shown.

The person who was planning on pulling their instrument cluster has a Titanium with MFT and therefore their cluster would look like the latter picture.
