Car pre-purchase question - 2002 SVT

Well, long story short, I'm giving up on my car. There's too much rust damage on the undercarriage of the car, and I'm not taking a chance on doing all the things I wanna do, then having the car take a nose dive on me.

I saw two SVT's that caught my eye - one is a black SVT with 85K miles, the other is a CD silver SVT with 77k miles.

The silver one, is at a Kia dealership down south from where I live & the black one, is at a used mom & pops type car lot.

I'd really like to buy the silver one, but it might be out of my financing ability, (my credit is shot) so I may end up buying the black one.

I'd like to get it inspected at a Ford dealership, but that might prove a bit difficult, because:

1. The car is located in Pompano Beach (about an hour's drive south)

2. I doubt the dealership would let me drive the car back up here to Port St. Lousy (erm... Lucie) to have my mechanic inspect it.

3. I don't know any mechanics in the Pompano Beach area that I'm sure I'd trust. I'd much prefer to bring it to a Ford dealership. They know their cars...that sorta thing.

So, the only thing I can think of, is to make arrangements with a Ford dealership down in Pompano Beach, to inspect the car.

With that out of the way, I have several questions regarding a pre-purchase inspection:

If it's a Ford manufactured car (Mustang, Focus, Ranger, Explorer, etc etc), brought to a Ford dealership, will they do it for free, (Highly unlikely, but still)? If not, does anyone have a ball park figure?

If it's a reputable used car dealership, there shouldn't be any problems with me wanting an inspection, correct? The only issue would be WHO I want to inspect the car, right?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

PS. I checked ahead with the mom & pops dealership, and they said they have the CarFax report on hand.

Whenever any of my friends have a similar situation I always tell them to go to a Firestone auto shop, they can do an inspection for 18 bucks (at least here in Utah). I think its called a 20 point inspection. They are all over so there might be one near you.

The answers to your two questions are: (1) not likely, but ask them, and (2) correct and correct. If they don't want an inspection, they may be hiding something. A carFax will tell you how many owners, and whether there have been accidents. If the car has been serviced at Ford, any dealer should be able to look up the service history in the Ford database. Finally, I have had experiences with Ford service departments that have either very rudimentary knowledge of SVTs, or simply, no clue. If they see SVTs regularly, they may be very helpful, if not, not so much. A rule of thumb, if it's heavily (and tastelessly) modded, be extra careful.
Good luck, hope you get a good one. Keep us posted

Pre purchase answers.

To sum up what others have said here goes. Get the VIN number and go/call it in to a Ford service writer. Ask for an OASIS report. This will tell you everything that a Ford/Mercury dealer might have done to a car. It will also bring up recalls for the vehicle. Second, if there is no Ford dealer close by try looking for a good speed shop. They might have a better handle on a SVT rather than a Firestone or other franchise garage. Finally, don't cheap out on a pre-purchase inspection. Go into this with both eyes open. Good luck.

Pre Inspection

I bought my SVT from a dealer in the Fort Lauderdale area I'm lucky to have a lot of knowledge about the SVT. my car had 83000 miles. Be prepared to do a timing belt and water pump very soon after purchase. I have had my car less than 2 months a just did the timing belt and water pump yesterday.

The one that I had my heart set on, was at Kia of Hollywood - it was CD silver, had a sun (or maybe its a moon?) roof, 77k miles, HID's, and Recaro seats. Unfortunately, the dealership wants 8900 for it.

I have family down in that area, so I was kinda hoping to make a weekend of it, but my work schedule conflicts with that plan.

I'd REALLY love to bring one of my mechanics with me, maybe throw him 60-70 bucks for his time, and have him go with me to take a peek at it.
