Project ST - History Lessons

I'd like to introduce myself. I'm working with fifteen52, Ken Block, and Ford on their Project ST campaign. The project is all about pumping up the new Focus ST in North America, but we're also out to elevate and educate people on some of the serious small performance cars Ford has been offering overseas and some lesser known domestic ones for years and linking that pedigree back to the new 2013 Ford Focus ST. And that's where I come in.

Here's what you've missed so far. Sorry it took me so long to find this forum

1963 Ford Lotus Cortina
1963 Ford Falcon Sprint
Ford Cortina-Lotus Mk2
1968 Ford Escort Twin Cam
Spa 6hrs in a Ford Falcon
1970 Ford Escort RS1600 and Mexico
1970 Ford Capri RS2600
1971 Ford Pinto
1973 Ford Escort RS2000
1973 Ford Capri RS3100
1974 Ford Mustang II
1975 Escort RS1800 Mk2
1975 Escort RS Mexico
1976 Escort RS2000 Mk2

And today, the 1976 Escort RS2000 Mk2 Series X and Group 1

Welcome! I have always been a fan of the Lotus Cortinas. I would love to see more photos of all of Ford's "compact" hot rods.

loved the articles. just read every one of them.... but I am still not sure the 74 mustang II should be on this list.... lol. i understand the addition of the pinto (after reading the article) but can't wrap my head around the mustang.

I think we in the USA only had the Pinto and the Mustang on that list and they were pretty sad cars even in their days. We had a Mercury Capri but never a Ford. The Pinto engine/manual trans wasn't bad, at least in my 1974 version but they were built in Germany, not the USA. Let's not even get into the "fire-bomb" aspect of the Pinto in rear end collisions mmmkay? That feature resulted from the desire of the Ford Motor Company to save around $5-12 each in production costs

Eff Ford USA right in the pooper for always peddling the crappiest of crappy small cars here while they had at least passable to decent cars on sale elsewhere. They are starting to make amends but the Fiesta, Fiesta ST, Focus and Focus ST are nowhere near enough. The only thing that could possibly redeem them is selling the Focus RS in the USA for a good price. They frigging owe us that much after all those years of selling the crappiest of crap in the country of their birth!

1963 Ford Falcon Sprint
I guess technically we also had the Falcon Sprints in the USA but these were extremely rare. I mean I'm probably about the same age as Jay Leno and I can relate to him saying that was the dream car of his youth. I also spent most of my life in the Detroit area and grew up in Detroit near the Dearborn border but never saw a Falcon Sprint with a 289 V-8 in the wild back then. Sunbeam Tigers with 260 and 289 V-8s were far more plentiful than those hot rod V-8 Falcons. We read about them in the car magazines though, so they must have existed somewhere.

Speaking of serious small performance cars from Ford...
Perhaps my favorite Ford of all time:

1.8L engine, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, and a 11.4 sec. 1/4 mile.
