How-To LED taillight on MK3 write up

* * * I am not responsible for any damage or warranty issues from this modification. Do it at your own risk! * * *
Here is a how to write up I made for the install of LED taillights on the MK3 (however I would think the taillight wiring harness would be the same on a sedan)

Tools needed
Wire cutters
Wire crimpers
Electrical tape
Electrical wire
Shrink tube (optional)
Voltage tester (optional)
3M heave duty outdoor double sided tape (optional)

If you are unsure of which LED bulbs to buy, I bought the following off Amazon
Plasma red LED's
* * * You will need 3 pairs of these * * *
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00C16...A12J7DMK6HQWCS

Resisters to keep your blinkers from hyper flashing and getting a brake light bulb fault
* * * You will need 2 pairs of these * * *
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007G6...A12J7DMK6HQWCS

First what I did to the resisters was I extended the wires from each end longer so I have slack to mount the resisters themselves and able to keep the wires tidy within the taillight harness. I'm not sure exactly how much I lengthened them but you can judge for yourself. I would estimate about 4 inches on each end or so
* * * this is where you use the electrical wire and shrink tube (or electrical tape)* * *

Remove both taillights or one at a time like I did. If you are u sure how to do it I know there is a thread on how to remove them somewhere on this forum.

Next remember which taillight socket is which or mark them before unplugging them so you know which is which.

* * * How to wire resisters * * *

brake light

Wire one end of the resister to the beige wire which is your brake power wire and the other end of the resister to the brake ground which is the second wire over on that bulb socket.
Once this is done your middle black wire will remain untouched.
Your brake light socket is ready to put in your LED bulb.

Turn signals
Follow the same instructions as the brake light but wire the resisters to the grey wire instead of beige

* * * 3157 bulb modification for signals * * *
Since the bulb you are putting in as a signal bulb is a 3157 you will have to snip the little nipples on the bottom sides to get the bulb to fit. Once you do that the bulb will still fit in snug and work

At this point what I did was used the 3M double sided tape and put it on the underside of the resisters so I can mount them to the body instead of drilling holes (the tape is holding up just fine with the heat the resister puts out)

At this point plug your harness back in and start your car, turn on your headlights, push your brake a few times and turn your left then right turn signal.
Shut off the car and start it back up making sure you don't get any light out error messages.
If you don't have any error messages you can plug in your night time driving bulb which is a plug and play, same as reverse light.
Now you can mount your resisters, plug in your bulbs and re install your taillights.

Here is a piece of the location of the resisters I ended up with after having to move them a few times without coming too close to the taillight or hitting the taillight housing.

Stock bulbs on left, plasma LED on right

LED's

Night lights, signal and brake all on at once

WOW, those are a lot brighter then I thought they would be. Adding to the future mod list.

Nice job and thanks for the great write up.

Nice write up. They don't look much different in your daytime pic but look extremely bright in your night shot. How are they in person?

Someone needs to make actual LED tail lights for our cars. Until that happens though, this is a great mod too.

They are actually really brought. I'll try to take a video soon.
I was comparing them to the OEM LED taillights on my 2012 Mustang and as far as brightness I'd say they are the same which is exactly what I was looking for.

Curious if anyone has used a resistor like this: http://bit.ly/18v2c46. I contacted the seller and they claim they don't get hot, but I don't see how that could be.
