03 No cruise adding cruise

I've read:
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...=193298&page=2

About the 03 that says you can't just take a cruise control equiped steering wheel and add it to the 03. However, my car has power locks/windows/etc just no CC. So would this work like the howto for 08-11?

Or am I screwed and need to pay $250-300 for aftermarket solution (can get a steering wheel with ti for <90, would have to find out how much dealer charges for reprograming but yeah).

Later models have the 'fly by wire" throttle, so it's all electronic & you just need the additional switches.

Earlier cars, like yours, are a mechanical throttle linkage & the servo motor/cable assembly that controls "cruise" throttle wouldn't be there. Nothing present for the Steering Wheel switches to control, no cruise computer - servo motor - etc..

Sorry, out of luck without adding the hdwe..

Well, they CLAIM it'll work....

Biggest downside I see is the extra column stalk for the control. Pull the column surround & drill a hole to bolt it in there...

LOOKS like they plug into existing harness somewhere for speed sensor, power etc.

I'd guess a full day & a six pack or two (grin)

Ear plugs for bystanders to tone down the "bleeps".

I haven't looked around for info. on someone doing a retrofit cruise. I'd suggest checking the "stickies" here, then looking/asking in the "mod" section for the MkI focus before going ahead with it. Might find some helpful info. before jumping right in.

If I see something I'll note it for you, wanted to post a comment as soon as I saw your reply.

Luck!

I've tried searching. Most howto's are for later models, which are easier to install.

Do you know where the VSS wire and tach wire would be in th e03? I've been searching online to find locations to tap into.

Related question, I have an 03 with no cruise. I also have my 2000 model Kona which was totaled from a side impact but still runs. The Kona had cruise control and tilt steering unlike my 03. Both have power windows and locks if that matters. Can I swap over the cruise control stuff from my Kona to the 03 so I can have cruise that will work? Would I need to get anything programmed?

Thanks

Not meaning to threadjack.

I'm 99% positive you can't take it from a diff model.

The only way you can is take the harness from another focus (same engine/model i believe) and steering wheel. Install that harness and such.

There is a 4 part video on youtube for 00-04 focus cruise control from 1 wrecked that had it and 1 that didn't.

The non cruise control focus's back in these years didn't have same harness's. They were different. So when ford was selling the "oem" after market cruise control. You got a new steering wheel with cruise buttons, but it's similar to the cruise I linked in my first post.

Meaning it's mechanical. It runs a wire to the throttle and pulls/releases it as needed. Now it did come with wireing that I believe was able to be plugged into existing plugs on the focus so it may have been easier. But from reading about it many people had some issues with it on where certain wires went.

Who knows.

Hopefully someone can verify an answer for tach/vss i got on 12volt.

Tachometer BLACK/ORANGE (AC) AT IGNITION COIL
Speed Sense YELLOW/RED (-) AT ABS HYDRAULIC UNIT ON DRIVERS SIDE FIREWALL UNDER HOOD

Tach may be Black/Green at the coil.

OK even tho i fix most things in my car, I'm terrible with things. SO (AC) means it has current running throuhg it? If so how much should I check for to verify it is tach?

And speed sense will what be negative?

I know once i get answer it'll be a duh moment, just brain froze on it right now.

I will say this about thecruisecontrolstore.com, very helpful. Just placed order yesterday and haven't even received it but called them.

Very helpful.

OK so our year ford focus, you ground tach. The focus has 1 tach out of ignition coil but it can cause problems. The cruise control recognizes many tach signals but some screw it up, so it could leave it open or something. I don't know. W/e i'll ground it.

He also said the VSS is in the kick panel of the passenger side, 3 PCM connector, middle, pos 28 bottom side. White/purple or white/blue.

They also went through the 12 switch settings. Very nice.
